DONCASTER is the venue for next week’s Goffs UK Spring Sale, and it marks the sale’s 60th anniversary.

As per last year’s format, the sale will be held over four days with the stores opening the sale on Monday and Tuesday (May 16th & 17th). The horses in training and point-to-pointers will be the focus on Wednesday and Thursday (May 18th & 19th).

Last year saw the store horse section expanded to two days and there were records across the board. The two sessions saw 41 lots sell for £50,000 or more, almost double the tally from 2019. The average price of over £32,000 was 13% above the 2017 record and the median price (£27,000) was also a record.

As expected, only a fraction of those horses have been sent to the races yet but even a quick glance through the results shows a number of very promising winners to have come out of the sale.

Alan King’s debut bumper winner Gitche Gumee was a £65,000 purchase last year and three graduates who have won point-to-points and been sold for at least five times their purchase price are The Gooner, Kap D’Attente and Broughshane.

Next week’s catalogue contains 313 stores and all of them are eligible to be entered for the Spring Sale Bumper, which makes a return to Newbury Racecourse next year following a two-year absence due to Covid-19.

Following the record success of last year’s sale, Goffs UK have increased the stake to £100,000, making it the richest bumper in the world.

That race will also see the introduction of the Bumper Bonus prizes which will award the winning trainer a free six-month lease of a two-stall horse box from leading manufacturer TheAult. The winning vendor will received a generous bespoke wine package from Charles Murphy Wines.
