MEADHBH Mealiff won the four-year-old final at the Cavan November Horse Festival last Sunday aboard Balmain D’Grandin Z.

Some 22 combinations qualified for the €1,000 final, sponsored by Lee Johnston Farrier, after two qualifying classes held on Thursday and Saturday.

As the second pair into the ring Balmain D’Grandin Z and Mealiff certainly caught the attention of judges Richard Bourns, Greg Broderick and Ian Fearon who awarded the pair a very high score of 203 points.

Owned by Meadhbh’s brother, USA-based show jumper Kevin Mealiff, the Zangersheide grey gelding is by Balou Star, out of Z-Tabea (Colman).

Cooley Farm’s Impresioso VD Donkhoeve Z was awarded the runner-up spot on a score of 194. By Insider VDL, out of Donna VD Donkhoeve (Presley Boy), he was ridden by Beth Burton.

Morning Edition, ridden by Brian Keohane, was the highest placed Irish-bred on a score of 188.7. By Tyson out of LSV Cruisante (Charante), he was bred by Grainne Murphy and is owned by Cathal McMunn and Jonathan Reape.

The Irish Sport Horse Crossriver Criostoir slotted into fourth place for owner/rider Nicholas Butler. By Dallas VDL out of Galwaybay Paulina (Askoll Peter Pan) the pair scored a total of 188.3. The gelding was bred by Walter Butler.

Greenacres Balou was guided into fifth place by owner Elaine O’Neill. Bred by Michael Callery, Greenacres Balou is by Balou Du Rouet out of Imperious Lux (Lux Z) and was the highest placed mare on a score of 187.

Brendan Murphy finished sixth with Martina McCrory’s OKE Dixieland Rock.. By Elvis Ter Putte she is out of Arona by Cobra and was given a score of 183.7.
