YOUNG rider Samuel Wilson won Sunday morning’s five-year-old final, sponsored by Patricia Foley, at the Cavan Winter Festival aboard Stacey Watling’s mare Sligo Puzzle Peace.
From the 36 that qualified for the final, just eight produced double-clear rounds and Wilson was best of those, breaking the beam in 35.38 seconds. By Sligo Candy Boy out of Harlequin Clover Lady (Harlequin du Carel), she was bred by Stephan Howley.
Shane Goggins secured second place, just as he had in the four-year-old final, this time with CSF Olympic Jewel, in a time of 37.04. Owned by Patrick Connolly in partnership with Goggins, the mare is by Mylord Carthago out of Olympic Clover (Clover Hill) and was bred by Brian Connolly.
Jacqueline Browne’s Keelnacally Cobra Clover was ridden by Johnathan Smyth into third place in a time of 37.65. By Cobra, the gelding was bred by Michael McCarthy out of the Clover Field mare Annaghmore Clofi.
Tracy Walshe rode her own Ballinaguilkey Fusion Exchange (Tullabeg Fusion x OBOS Quality 004) into fourth in 38.92, while Ita McDermott and her own Emo Pixie (Pollux de Muze x Vechta) took fifth.
Vincent Byrne riding Ivor Broderick’s Cornerado VDL (Cornet Obolensky - Indorado) completed the line-up in sixth.
Ausra Clarke and Gregory Clarke’s seven-year-old Dutch-bred gelding Janco won the 1.30m six and seven-year-old final which was sponsored to the tune of €1,500 by NK Coatings.
A total of 37 lined out for the class and of these, 15 produced a first round clear to progress to the jump-off. Just six of the 15 managed to leave all the fences intact.
Clarke was fastest in a time of 40.33, a margin of over two seconds ahead of second placed Emma McEntee riding Jenny Lusk’s Boss Quality (OBOS Quality 004 x Clover Fields) in 42.84.
Francis Connors and Highfort Stud’s six-year-old Luidam mare Much Loved took third in 46.82, while fourth went to William Hickey riding his home-bred GRS Jessica Jones (Toulon x Kannan). Elaine O’Neill and Keith Ennis’ Olympic GL FVD slotted into fifth, while sixth was Michael Roche with his own MB Lorenzo R.
