COUNTY Meath’s Alexander Butler today (Sunday) scored one of the biggest wins of his career, after he came out on top in a hugely competitive jump-off to land the four-star Grand Prix at Arezzo Toscana Tour in Italy.

Thirteen of the 50 starters made it through to the jump-off, with Butler riding the 15-year-old stallion Chilli B, the sole Irish representative to take on the second round challenge against the clock. Another flawless clear in 43.29 seconds saw the Irish rider claim the €25,000 first prize, finishing just ahead of Poland’s Adam Grzegorzewski and Issem who crossed the line clear in 43.97 to take second. Third place went to French former World No.1 Kevin Staut with Bond Jamesbond de Hay.

Irish pony team triumphs

Meanwhile in Belgium, a fantastic performance from the Irish Pony team, managed by Gary Marshall, saw them claim a hard-fought victory in the FEI Nations Cup at Sentower Park. The team of Paddy Reape with Valma De Fougnard, James Brennan with MHS Glow (ISH), Coen Williams with Saxton Freedam (ISH) and James Derwin with Rincoola Babog (ISH), were in a share of second place at the halfway stage on 12 faults. A flawless second round from the Irish team saw them finish on their first round score to take victory ahead of France who finished as runners-up on 13 faults. Seven teams competed.
