JOHN Gosden had just one runner in the Derby – 40/1 shot Worthily, who finished last – and none in the Irish Derby, but he showed that his three-year-old middle-distance colt cupboard was by no means bare by sending out Mishriff to win the French equivalent, the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly on Sunday.

The colt had won a listed race at Newmarket on his previous start in a good time, and the form had been boosted by the runner-up Volkan Star, as well as arguably by the next three home, since. It still took further improvement, and a willing attitude when the chips were down, for him to prevail.
