SEVENTY-THREE of the 95 lots catalogued for next week’s Goresbridge Go For Gold sale are three-year-olds with the major producers of young horses consigning multiple entries – sometimes between them.

Last November, Co Wexford-based Jason Higgins joined forces with Co Waterford’s Meabh Bolger and Brian Flynn of MBF Sporthorses to sell the top-priced lot, MBF Bonfire Heart, a three-year-old gelding by Castlecomer Q, who headed for England having been purchased by Barratt Equestrian for €65,000.

This time around, in addition to horses they are selling on their own, or with others, the same trio have five three-year-olds entered, four of whom are registered as Irish Sport Horses, while the other two are registered with the KWPN Studbook.

The first of the quintet is MBF Replacement (Lot 27), an ISH gelding by Stetter, who was bred in Co Westmeath by Michael O’Sullivan. The bay is out of Voshana M (by Oberon du Moulin), who is dam previously of the Berlin mare Evoshana M (1.40m) and is a half-sister to the Tobajo Picez stallion Royal Butterfly (1.50m) and to the Winningmood mare Winning Star (1.40m).

The partnership’s other ISH geldings are PLS Dundaredevil MBF (Lot 50), a dun by the Connemara stallion Dunloughan Scot out of Kilbunny Lamami (by Quidam Junior I), a half-sister to the Bonmahon Master Blue gelding Killbunny Andy (CCI4*-L and CSI4*), and the final lot in the sale, PLS Maverick MBF (Lot 99). This bay is also by a Connemara stallion, Loughmor Rambler, out of PLS Hippo Q (by Castlecomer Q), who comes from the family of The Fernhill Fox (CCI3*-L).

Fillies

Two fillies complete the consignment, starting with the KWPN-registered Pasha (Lot 47), a Joint Venture bay from the family of the 1.45m performers, Jamacoma and Classic. The ISH bay Carrickview MBF (Lot 67) is a daughter of Vittorio out of the Cavalier Royale mare Penhaligon Carmen, whose previous produce include Carrickview Libretto (1.40m) while she is a half-sister to the dam of Van Thee Man (CCI4*-S) and GHS Calexico (CCI3*-S).

Six-year-olds

On their own, Bolger and Flynn have six three-year-olds catalogued, including the Angelo European Studbook-registered MBF Bojo, who opens this section of the sale as Lot 24.

A bay by Bon Jovi, this gelding’s dam is the unraced British-bred Presenting mare Present Leader, who comes from the family of the blacktype performers Kalahari Queen and King’s Banquet amongst others. Present Leader has mainly produced thoroughbred foals, her filly of this year being by the French-bred Dink, who first stood in Spain with Luis Alvarez Cervera and is now based at the Skelton family’s Alne Park Stud in Warwickshire.

Among the MBF Sporthorses’ draft are two geldings by Connemara sires, the dun MBF Longford (Lot 30), a son of Moonlight Silver Shadow, and the grey MBF Quick Visit (Lot 60), by Abbeyfield Comet; there are also two KWPN-registered bays, the Kitt SB filly MBF Philouniki (Lot 40) and the Golddigger gelding MBF Dig Deep (Lot 70). The ISH gelding Dolmen MBF (Lot 90), who comes from the family of the 1.60m performers Will Wimble and Forever Blue, completes the consignment.

Higgins offerings

There are five entries in the sale also catalogued under the Higgins Sporthorses’ banner including two three-year-old geldings being sold in partnership with Mary Bolger, the first of whom is the Bolger-bred Colandro bay Kilcannon Stylus (Lot 37), who is out of the Harlequin du Carel mare Kilcannon Cavaquin (1.35m) from the family of Cavalier Angel (1.40m) and JKF Vogue (CCI3*-L). The draft also features the KWPN-registered Pacific (Lot 77), a Panenka de Kalvarie gelding from the family of Bella Bonna (Lot 77).

Andrew Williams, who signed for last year’s top-priced lot on behalf of Barratt Equestrian, is selling NPS Neraska (Lot 31), a three-year-old grey filly by NPS Super Nova out of a Diabeau mare, who comes from the family of Rinus (CCI4*-L). As has become the norm, Williams has conducted interviews with some of the Go For Gold team, which can be found online along with his preview of the sale.
