THE Irish Shows Association hailed the announcement of a funding package of €1 million for agricultural shows across the country as a major boost this week.

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, made the announcement at the official launch of the 2025 ISA yearbook in Athlone last Saturday. As part of the initiative, 123 shows in Ireland will receive a grant of between €4,260 and €11,410 depending on their size. This funding will support the work of each of the show committees, as they prepare for the upcoming show season.

The funding brings the total allocated to agricultural shows since 2018 to over €5.3 million.

Speaking at the event, Minister Calleary said: “Agricultural shows are a key component of life in rural Ireland and I am delighted today to announce a further investment of €1 million to support 123 agricultural shows right across the country.

“Although farming practices have changed, agriculture is still the backbone of life in rural Ireland and plays a vital role in our national economy. The agricultural show as we know it has so much to offer, not just in terms of the competitive element, but also as a platform for local businesses, local farmers and for local craft and artisan food producers. The local show is also one of the best days of the year for meeting neighbours and friends.”

Distribution

Galway is the biggest benefactor of the funding, with a total of €139,270 distributed between 19 agricultural shows. The highest package of €9,995 in the county is allocated to the annual Clifden Connemara Pony Show.

Co Cork is next best, with a total funding of €138,120, divided between 16 shows. Cork Summer Show will receive the largest pot of funding available - €11,410. Other big events to receive €11,410 include Bannow and Rathangan in Co Wexford, Iverk Show in Kilkenny, Tinahely Show in Co Wicklow and Tullamore Show in Co Offaly.
