WESLEY College’s leg of the TRI Equestrian Interschools league attracted a large enthusiastic entry to CoilÓg Equestrian Centre last Sunday with classes running in both arenas right through the day.

The Hornbeam Arena catered for the open classes starting with the TRI Equestrian Open Team class which saw the red ribbons and 10 league points go to local school Newbridge College ahead of Ashbourne Community College in second and Scoil Mhuire Trim in third.

Woody, ridden by Bonnie O’Neill, Gateaux Mr Blue ridden by Ellen O’Neill, Gorm ridden by Lucy McCarthy and Labanseigh Lexi ridden by Cici Murray represented the winning school while Milly ridden by Saoirse Kiernan, Clonbrock Against the Odds and Clara Lynam, A Bay Micky ridden by Aimee Walsh and Future Sky Trend ridden by Leelan Burtenshaw made up the team from Ashbourne. Flahulach and Caoimhe Murra, Right on Q ridden by Kate Carroll, Lady Ace with Isabel Drumm and Ard na Carrig and Jessica Corcoran were on the Scoil Mhuire team. The final league points on offer went to St Gerard’s, St Mary’s College Naas and Tullow Community College.

Open league

The TRI Equestrian Open Individual league followed and attracted many entries. First place was awarded to Saoirse Handley riding DG Arkill representing the host school Wesley College, with Moyne Community College’s John Minagh riding Extravaganza taking the runner-up slot. Hannah O’Neill on Drummin Pretty Lady from Coláiste Bhríde Carnew was third. The remaining places and points were awarded to Sean Treacy from CBS Naas, Aoife Flynn from St. Kevin’s Dunlavin and Anna Rose Ryan from Alexandra College.

The TRI Equestrian Premier 110 class was also well supported with Kilkenny College representative Martha Dolan on Pippa emerging victorious to take the win ahead of Kevin Healy from Columba College on Kilbunny Kabana, with Newbridge College’s Mia Browne riding Empress Nala in third. Fourth, fifth and sixth went to Katie McGrath, Katie Duignan and Coleen Klinowska and all six qualify for the final at the end of the equestrian schools’ year.

The last class of the day in the Lime Arena was The Equieire novice 90cm class which saw some excellent jumping displays and some very well-turned-out combinations. Cillian Tobin representing Tullow CS came out on top riding Hershey’s Kiss. Sarah Boyce Donoghue riding Four Mile Boy from Ardscoil Rathangan came second ahead of Darragh O’Brien riding Hedge Sparrow for Borris Vocational School. Ellie Vaughan and REC Morgano from Mountrath Community School won the Equieire turnout prize, presented on the day by Emma Keogh of Equieire.

Before this class the primary teams put on a good display. With places decided by means of optimum time the team from St Gerard’s Bray Junior School-Stone Haven Tweety and Dahlia Durkan, Glory and Zoe Boydeck, Clonan Hannah and Charlotte Dodd and Misty and Isabella DiBiasi emerged in first place ahead of the mixed team from St Canice’s and Listerlin team who took the runner-up spot. This team consisted of Bornaltra Boy and Sadbh Roche, KitKat and Emily Doyle, OhMeOhMy and Julie Kinsella and last but not least, Annie’s Last and Luca Kinsella. Rathmore National School’s team of Ardcull Millie with Nina Smith, Kara Silver and Ava Jenkinson, Carraun Ferdy and Georgia Queally and Llanafanfawr Nicolas with Gloria Queally was third. Sophie White riding Ivy for Scoil Diarmada won the 55cm class with Isabella DiBiasi on Misty in second and Gracie Kelly riding Willow in third.

The EII 75cm league class was hotly contested with victory again going to St Gerard’s represented by Charlotte Dodd on Clonan Hannah followed by Luca Kinsella riding Annie’s Last for St Canice’s and Listerlin and Maya White and Pixie from Scoil Diarmada. The red rosette in the 80cm class open to both secondary and primary pupils was claimed by Ella Kidd riding Coppenagh Otto for Borris Vocational School. Action moves to Mullingar this weekend with the Fagan team in Mullingar Equestrian Centre running proceedings.
