JUST as the showing season starts, Side Saddle Ireland has launched a national championship which, in association with Carr & Day & Martin, will be run on a league basis across all agricultural shows and horse shows, which are affiliated to the organisation (SSI).
There is a prize fund of €2,750, of which €1,000 will be presented to the overall lady champion, with prizes for first to sixth in both ladies and junior sections. Carr & Day & Martin are also sponsoring a best turned-out rosette for every affiliated class during the season, with a sash being presented to the lady and junior with the most turn-out rosettes when the campaign ends.
“Our aim is increase the number of competitors in the side saddle classes at all of the fabulous agricultural shows and horse shows, which have kept side saddle going for us over the last 40 years,” commented SSI’s secretary, Ciara O’Connell. “It will give riders something to look forward to in addition to the Dublin Horse Show and its qualifiers.
“There is something for everyone taking part in the league to aim for as there are trophies for lots of different categories including top-placed Irish Draught, thoroughbred, Connemara pony, over 143cm pony and under 143cm pony, et cetera. The Emily Dillon Perpetual Memorial Trophy will be presented to the highest-placed lady riding a Traditional Irish Horse in the league. You can find all information on our website.”
