TIPPERARY’S Kate Walsh has been announced as the Eventing Ireland Youth Ambassador for 2024.

Taking over the reins from European pony team rider Molly O’Connor, Kate is already making her mark on the eventing scene, having been named a finalist in the Newcomer of the Year category and winner of the Junior 100 League at the Eventing Ireland Youth Awards 2024, which were held last week at Barberstown Castle.

“I’m delighted to have been chosen as the 2024 EI Youth Ambassador, I’ve got big shoes to fill as Molly did such a fantastic job last year, but I look forward to sharing my progress, different training tips and reports from both national and international competitions,” she said.

“I’m very lucky to have the ride on two wonderful horses, Beechtree Watchful and Lisheen Fork Lightning. I had a super first season with them last year and am excited to get back out in 2024.

“Paddington (Beechtree Watchful) is a 13-year-old Connemara gelding. I’ve had him since March 2020. He’s been the most amazing little pony, bringing me all the way from jumping 80cm show jumps to flying around 110s at the RDS and winning a National Championship. He has a fantastic temperament and is one of the most affectionate horses I know.

“Oli (Lisheen Fork Lightning) is an 18-year-old gelding, who I began riding in August of 2022. In the short time I’ve known him, he has taught me so so much. He’s given me a lot of firsts; my first 110, my first international, and all with pricked ears and a smile on his face. He’s not always been the easiest, but tries his very hardest for me.

“I just want to say a massive thank you to all at Eventing Ireland for giving me this fantastic opportunity. I also wouldn’t have been able to write about anything of the above without the support of my incredible owners, parents, instructors and friends. I’m so excited for the season to kick off and see what comes out of it!”

All the very best of luck to you from the Irish Horse World, Kate!
