CATHAL Daniels and Cappog Tomy captured the 19th round of the 1.40m Gain/Alltech National Grand Prix, sponsored by Plusvital, at the busy Mullingar Summer Championships last Sunday afternoon.
By Camiro De Haar Z out of Cornacassa Ferro (S Creevagh Ferro Ex Siebe) and bred by Tommy Reilly, the 13-year-old gelding has notched up several impressive results at Grand Prix level over the past few years, most recently a fifth place finish in the Plusvital 1.50m Premier Grand Prix in Tattersalls.
From a big start list of 45 combinations, 17 produced a first round clear and progressed to the jump-off. Just 10 of them left all the fences intact through the decider.
Daniels was fastest, breaking the finish beams at 37.44 for the win and €2,000 in prize money. Junior Katie McEntee and Gerry Marron’s home-bred gelding Kinmar Bespoke (O-Piloth x Aganix Du Seigneur) were runners-up in 37.99.
Declan Dooley’s eight-year-old CSF Olympic Jewel (Mylord Carthago x Clover Hill), bred by Brian Connolly, was ridden to third place by junior Gary Dooley in 38.45.
Derek McConnell rode Inlaws Manolo (Corland x Lord Z), bred by Tomas Hester and owned by Sorcha Hennessy, to finish in fourth place in 40.21. Young rider Max Wachman, who is competing in the five-star international classes this week at the Dublin Horse Show, and his grandmother Susan Magnier’s mare Innisfree (Iron Man Van De Padenborre x Catango Z) were fifth in 40.31.
Junior rider Cian McMunn partnered Breda McMunn’s Lisboy Emerald (Emerald Vant Ruytershof x Lux Z), bred by Michael McDonagh, into sixth place.
The next and penultimate round of the Gain/Alltech Grand Prix league takes place in Necarne on August 25th, with the final taking place at the Irish Breeders’ Classic final in Barnadown on August 31st.
