PROLIFIC Connemara Pony stallion Dexter Leam Pondi (Leam Finnigan x White Granite) passed away on November 10th, leaving a superb legacy behind.

At the ripe age of 32, the multi-medallist took his last breath at the Haras de la Bouloye, France, where he had enjoyed a peaceful retirement for several years.

The pony has since been widely heralded as an unforgettable sportsman, who leaves behind a superb lineage.

‘Dede’ as he was known, took many young riders to a high level, including his owner, Alice Chambaud, who had huge success with the stallion.

Bred by Gilles Le Mouellic, he was supreme Connemara champion at three years old and then cut his teeth under Yoann Le Vot, followed by Marc Hardy, then Chambaud, with whom he competed at Pony Grand Prix level.

Dexter competed in six European championships (team silver in 2002, bronze in 2004, fourth in 2003, tied for seventh individual in 2006), had four victories in CSIP Grands Prix (Nichelino, Marsens twice, Cinzano), once in the CSIOP Grand Prix (Arezzo), and several in pony Nations Cups. He was French Grand Prix Elite champion in 2003, silver medallist in 2005, fifth in 2004 and Italian champion in 2007. His sporting career ended in 2007.

After this, he was stationed at stud at the Haras de la Bouloye, in Pas-de-Calais.

Chambaud paid tribute to a partner she will never forget: “Today we say goodbye to you, this incredible pony, our Dede, who lit up our lives with his majestic presence. We will always remember you, your silly personality, your grace and the inspiration you brought to our lives.

“Watching you gallop across the fields or during a show was a breathtaking display of raw beauty, unparalleled elegance and a perfect blend of strength and grace. You embodied an indomitable spirit, unwavering endurance and unyielding perseverance.

“Your remarkable longevity (32y) was a testament to the love and care you received from us, and especially in recent years from Audrey Marchand and the entire Haras de la Bouloye team.

“Thank you for giving me, a little inexperienced rider, everything and for making me the person I am today. You will always remain the horse of my life, with whom I have shared some of the most incredible moments of my life.”

The Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society extended condolences to Alice Chambaud, the team at Haras de la Bouloye and all connections.
