How does it work?

There are three separate dressage competitions in all:

2. Grand Prix Special (Friday, August 12th, 2-8pm Irish time). This phase determines the team winners and 18 individual finalists.

3. Grand Prix Freestyle Final (Monday, August 15th, 2-6pm Irish time) This determines the individual medallists, based on their final displays, which are performed to music.

Who are the favourites?

Defending their individual and team title, Britain is one of the favourites for the Rio Olympics in dressage.

Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro now hold all three world records in Grand Prix, Grand Prix Freestyle and Freestyle, along with with a double gold at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Game 2014 in Normandy (France) and Grand Prix Special and Freestyle gold at the FEI European Dressage Championships in Aachen (Germany) in 2015.

Not only that, they became the champions of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage series in both 2014 and 2015. With such a stunning record, they are the ones to beat at this years Olympics.

One pair, Germany's Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH are expected to make Dujardin and Valegro work for their title, having been beaten by them by just 0.25 percent at the Freestyle in Aachen last summer.

The German's plan on a strong performance with Sönke Rothenberger (Cosmo), Dorothee Schneider (Showtime FRH) and the inimitable Isabell Werth (Weihegold OLD) joining Kristina Bröring-Sprehe.

Having eight Olympic medals under her belt, Werth is a legend in the dressage world. With a new partnership in the 11-year old mare Weihegold, she is aiming high for this Olympics.
