LAST week, we encouraged readers to look at Treo Eile’s social media pages for a video featuring Lilymai Berry and her retrained racehorse, Skylanna Scatman.
Apart from her rivals, anyone who had done so would have been cheering Berry on at Wexford Equestrian on Wednesday when she and her nine-year-old Tajraasi gelding won the fourth leg of the thoroughbred class at the Stepping Stones to Success League.
With one of four clear rounds in the 14-runner class, they completed on their dressage score of 30.8 penalties.
This was a second victory in this year’s series for Berry and the attractive bay who is out of the non-winning Saddlers’ Hall mare Howyanow.
Skylanna Scatman ran 11 times in point-to-points, finishing second twice, before the plug was pulled on his racing career.
Last year, Berry partnered him to finish second in this Treo Eile-sponsored league before winning the Intro Intermediate title at the Connolly’s Red Mills/Irish Pony Club eventing championships at Tattersalls Ireland in August.
The Intermediate title at the same championships is the seasonal target this year for the Killinick Branch representatives who will first finish out this league where they are lying top on 20 points going into Tuesday’s final.
Snapping at their heels on 19 points apiece are Charlie Walshe and her recent Eventing Ireland Western Region/Sealac event starter series winner Gervada, who competed at the first two qualifiers at Wexford Equestrian, winning on the second occasion, and the Jo Andrews-owned and ridden Lucere.
The latter, a six-year-old Leading Light gelding, picked up eight jumping penalties on Wednesday en route to finishing third (36), having won seven days earlier.
On his second start in this season’s league, Gerald Bloomer filled the runner-up slot with J.P. King’s seven-year-old Valirann gelding Ballydrummond whose completion score of 32.8 included four jumping penalties.
This was a much-improved performance on their first outing in round two. Following her heavy fall in round three, it was good to see Alice Copithorne back here on Red Rossanna and Mustang Sally who placed fifth and ninth respectively.
At Tuesday’s finals there will be prizes for the top open and top novice horses while the Irish Horse Welfare Trust will present a prize to connections of the highest-placed former racehorse.
