A great man. Hard on the outside but a heart of gold. Delighted to have rode him a winner or two and I’m still benefitting from the many bollockings. Enjoy retirement Mike. (on Michael Hourigan’s retirement)

Well done to Michael Hourigan on a fantastic career, brilliant trainer. So good to ride for. Had a lovely time working with him for a couple years and got to ride some super horses such as Beef Or Salmon, Hi Cloy, Church Island, A New Story etc

Wishing a very happy retirement to the legendary Michael Hourigan who gifted us so many magical moments with BEEF OR SALMON (IRE), DORANS PRIDE (IRE) & many more.

“Racing has been very good to us,” he says after over 50 years as a trainer. And you have been very good to racing too, Michael. Thanks for the memories!

The industry of greyhound racing couldn’t have asked for a better interview here. Genius move to get him on, goes to show how disconnected some of these reform arguments are from reality. Matt has actually done the sport a favour. (Matt Zarb-Cousin on Luck On Sunday)

So greyhound racing is banned on welfare grounds and then someone asks; “Has anyone thought to look at the comparative welfare data in horse racing?”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine but I’ll take a peek.”

“Great. What’s it showing?”

I don’t believe in a racing wallet. I believe in a sports wallet. I believe very strongly in it. This nonsense that people with a gambling disorder would all swop from slots to sports if different rules is not backed up by evidence. See females as an example.

Can’t remember a year when there was so much froth around the Festival handicaps. They’re an absolute crap shoot, especially this far out, but that hasn’t stopped every man, woman and woof taking a view. Enough already.

Heartbroken for Bob Baffert, run down on the lead in a $1.25m stake by a horse who sold for $70k in a Texas yearling sale. Absolute shame. (Some Americans still have a sense of humour!)
