JUMBY is traditionally a slower starter than Harry Kane, but both enjoyed a fruitful weekend in their respective spheres.

Eve Johnson Houghton’s New Bay colt managed to jump on terms with his Hungerford Stakes rivals, in stark contrast to a number of his outings this term, and there was little doubt he benefited from a fierce early pace which strengthened following a steady early furlong.

The likes of pacesetters Pogo and Dubai Poet contributed to produce a second- and third-furlong aggregate of 22.15sec which was markedly quicker than the race won by Victory Dance (23.14) and the handicap which the veteran Documenting landed (23.96secs).

A brisk mid-race gallop afforded Jumby the chance to finish to good effect under William Buick who was taking his record to three wins from seven rides aboard the four-year-old.

Having contested some of the season’s bigger field handicaps, Jumby took his record to smaller fields to five from 11 (in fields of 12 of less) and he certainly appreciated having the cheekpieces removed as he graduated to pattern-race winner.

In the mix

It was to the credit of Dubai Poet that, after help setting such a strong gallop, he remained in the mix for so long.

The decision to drop back to seven furlongs looks a smart one by connections who witnessed their son of Lope De Vega produce another fine effort at the Berkshire venue.

Doncaster could beckon for Dubai Poet who looks a likely type for the Group 2 Cazoo Park Stakes.

Johnson Houghton enjoyed a terrific day at Newbury when Suzy’s Shoes landed what appeared at first glance a modest maiden.

A five-race maiden heading into Saturday’s event, the daughter of Nathaniel appeared to have thrived for a near three-month break as she sauntered through her 11-furlong assignment to register a first career win in a smart time.

Not only was the furlong-per-furlong time extremely healthy in comparison to Geoffrey Freer winner and St Leger aspirant Zechariah, but the three-furlong sectional was marginally quicker at 35.87secs, while the final furlong (12.19secs) was quicker than Jumby (12.4) to enforce the view the imposing Suzy’s Shoes is a filly to keep onside, both this season and next.
