When Ryan Moore’s career comes to a close, his ride on Savethelastdance will be right to the top of a huge highlight reel.

He somehow raised a second effort out of Savethelastdance, clutching victory from the jaws of defeat, to nail the British raider Bluestocking on the line and claim classic glory for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners.

The 4/5 favourite raced in third for most of the journey, in behind a good gallop set by stablemate Library, however she was one of the first off the bridle coming into the straight and got into a barging match with Azazat.

Shortly after Bluestocking and Colin Keane swept by her and looked to have won the day when she eventually conquered Library, but back came Savethelastdance down the outside, and in the end, she was a near cosy half-length winner on the line, such was the power of her second wind. On Betfair, just over €14 was traded on her at the rooftop price of 999/1 in the in-running betting.

“Ryan gave her a brilliant ride, to remotivate her, incredible,” O’Brien said. “He saw when she was in a little bit of trouble and he kept her moving forward without panicking and then got her out, then asked her to come again, and it’s a very difficult thing to remotivate a horse in that ground, but she answered for him.

“It was a long time since she ran. She had a break after Epsom and this was her first run back for an autumn campaign. Obviously the ground was way different to what she had the last time and Chris’s filly came up and came around her just as she was starting to get going and might have intimidated her.

“She’s a massive big masculine filly. She has a pair of horns on her head and that's unusual for a filly, and she has a big strong backside on her. She is out of a Scat Daddy mare, and by Galileo, and all of the Galileo came out of her when Ryan really wanted it.”

The trainer of the runner-up Bluestocking is Ralph Beckett and all he could do was laugh, taking what must have felt like a gut punch loss with in great sport.

“We were beaten by a better filly,” he said. “I couldn’t believe how well it was going - maybe that was the problem! It was a great run, I’m thrilled with her. She got a perfect ride, he (Colin Keane) hit the front inside the distance, didn’t go too soon and we just got beaten by a better filly.”

Savethelastdance is set for an autumn campaign now and was cut to a general 5/1 for the St Leger. On her prospects going forward, O’Brien said: “Obviously we know that she stays very well. She is going to sharpen up from today. He bounced her out, she can go forward if you like and she’ll find plenty and save plenty.”
