TALENTED flat apprentice Wayne Hassett lost a winner yesterday when it emerged that he rode in seven races earlier this season with the wrong claim.
Hassett, originally from Kerry and now based with Joseph O’Brien, has ridden 30 winners in Ireland so far in his career but it was his sole British winner - at Wolverhampton - which led to confusion over when exactly his claim was reduced from 7lb to 5lb.
The young rider did not realise it was his responsibility to declare his British winner and this led to him riding in seven Irish races with the wrong claim, winning one of them.
Yesterday the Referrals Committee disqualified Hassett from all seven races, including the Sligo handicap he won last month on Carlo Bianconi. That race has been awarded to John Nallen’s Pinball Wizard.
The Appeals Panel also sat yesterday to consider an appeal by trainer Jessica Harrington against the demotion of Mo Ghille Mar at Leopardstown on May 17th.
Ridden by Keithen Kennedy, Mo Ghille Mar was first past the post in a 10-furlong handicap but was demoted to sixth place for causing interference to the fifth-placed Enthralling. The appeal was dismissed.
