WEDNESDAY’S Goffs September Horses In Training Sale at Doncaster was a low-key affair, and the lack of quality lots hit the final figures hard.
The 89 lots offered included drafts from Gigginstown House Stud and Gordon Elliott, and a small selection of National Hunt two-year-old stores. Trade was topped by Champ De Gane, a horse-in-training from Stuart Crawford’s Newlands Farm, and the six-year-old was purchased by Kevin Jardine for £33,000.
A French-bred son of Kapgarde who has been placed in bumpers, over hurdles and fences, the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede-owned gelding is a half-brother to the leading French and Italian hurdler Champ De Bataille.
Other lots to feature included Pickanumber, and this horse in training from Peter Croke’s Ballyfree House Stables was knocked down to Olly Murphy Racing for £30,000. Runner-up last time out at Wexford in a maiden hurdle, the five-year-old Shantou gelding is out of a Grade 3 chase runner-up who is a full-sister to the Cork Grand National winner Mattock Ranger.
Godolphin’s Signcastle City, a winning three-year-old son of Dark Angel from East Everleigh Stables, was sold to his trainer Richard Hannon for £27,000. Successful last year as a juvenile and placed in a listed race, Signcastle City is a grandson of the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks winner and Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Pongee.
Three lots realised £26,000 each and included the best of the Gigginstown and Elliott drafts. In the case of the Grade 1 winning chaser Fury Road, the nine-year-old Stowaway gelding will be returning to the Elliott yard after Aidan O’Ryan successful outbid all others.
Gordon Elliott sold the bumper and dual hurdle winner Happy D’Ex, a six-year-old daughter of Saddler Maker, to Sheila Lewis, while Monbeg Stables signed for the best of the two-year-olds on offer, Little Oakwell Stud’s son of four-time jumps winner Deception Island. The gelding comes from the family of Cyfor Malta.
