THE Tattersalls December Foal Sale is one of the most exciting of the year.
It gives us an insight into market confidence for 2023 and also provides a barometer of which stallions are hot, including those with first-crop foals on offer.
Next week in Newmarket (starting on Wednesday) the four-day Foal Sale will see over 1,100 foals offered for sale and they will be fought over by pinhookers and end-users.
There are 24 first-crop sires represented, including classic and/or Group/Grade 1 winners Circus Maximus, Earthlight, Ghaiyyath, Golden Horde, Hello Youmzain, Honor A P, Kameko, King Of Change, Mohaather, Persian King, Pinatubo, River Boyne, Sands Of Mali, Sottsass and Without Parole.
The catalogue boasts no less than 153 foals by the current top 15 active British and Irish sires, and 209 by the current top 20, including Acclamation, Camelot, Churchill, Dandy Man, Dark Angel, Dubawi, Frankel, Holy Roman Emperor, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, Nathaniel, Night Of Thunder, No Nay Never, Oasis Dream, Sea The Stars, Showcasing and Starspangledbanner.
There are own and half-brothers and -sisters to 161 group race and listed winners, including 11 Group 1 winners. These are headed by a Kingman half-sister to Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes winner Chaldean, and half-brothers to this year’s classic winners Cachet and Eldar Eldarov.
Chaldean, who was bought for 550,000gns by Juddmonte Farms at the 2020 renewal of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, is out of the remarkable Dutch Art mare Suelita whose progeny include the Group 2 Mill Reef winner Alkumait, the listed winner The Broghie Man and the listed-placed duo Get Ahead and Gloves Lynch.
The Wootton Bassett half-brother to Group 1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde, the Kingman half-brother to Group 1 Nassau Stakes winner Lady Bowthorpe and the Invincible Army half-brother to this year’s Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Lezoo are amongst other highlights, alongside a Sea The Stars half-sister to Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes-winning two-year-old Sakheer and Group 2 winner Lemista.
There are 92 foals out of group and listed winning mares catalogued including Too Darn Hot colts out of the Oaks winner Talent and Group 1 Irish St Leger winner Voleuse De Coeurs, and a Kitten’s Joy colt out of St Leger winner Simple Verse.
A Saxon Warrior filly out of the Group 1 winner Sultanina, a Dubawi filly out of Group 2 winner Sans Equivoque, and a Sea The Moon colt out of the champion French filly Flotilla are amongst the other highlights.
Record-breaking champion sire Frankel has nine foals catalogued including the half-sister to Group 1 winner Accidental Agent, the half-brother to champion German two-year-old colt Wonderful Moon and a filly out of Grade 1 Beverley D Stakes runner-up Awesometank.
The largest consignment is the team of 54 foals coming from Richard Kent’s Mickley Stud followed by the 46 catalogued from Barton Stud, while Genesis Green Stud, leading consignor at the 2021 December Foal Sale, has a team of seven foals.
Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: “As well as consistent racecourse success, the Tattersalls December Foal Sale has been the source of spectacular pinhooking triumphs and we have some truly outstanding foals catalogued this year, with the quality and diversity to appeal to buyers from throughout the world at all levels of the market.”
