THERE can’t be many sales at which you could buy potential Grade 1 winners over jumps and on the flat. However, next week’s Arqana Summer Sale can claim to be just that.
Offering National Hunt stores, horses in training under both codes, breeze-up horses and mares in foal, the Deauville auction really has all the angles covered and the results on the track are impressive.
This year’s US Grade 1 winner Chez Pierre was a €100,000 purchase in the breeze-up section of this sale in 2020. Two years earlier the same sum was paid at this sale for Fastorslow, winner of the 2023 Grade 1 Punchestown Gold Cup.
Other recent graduates include Greaneteen, Lord Glitters, French Dynamite, Gelino Bello and Afadil, a very useful novice hurdler for Paul Nicholls last season.
Nicholls and Willie Mullins (through agent Pierre Boulard) are regular buyers at the Summer Sale, as is Gordon Elliott and J.P. McManus. Among the horses bought here last year Mullins bought Absurde at this sale,
This year’s catalogue consists of 92 pre-trained two-year-olds, 162 two and three-year-old stores, 160 horses in training as well as 80 fillies and mares in the breeding section.
The ‘breezers’ will work at Deauville Racecourse from 1pm on Tuesday, July 4th. Selling starts at 11am on Wednesday, July 5th when all the two-year-olds and stores will be offered. Breeze-up consignors include Thomond O’Mara’s Knockanglass Stables, Ryan Conran’s Lacka House Stables, Cristiano Martins, Eoin McDonagh’s Shanaville Stables, Ronald de Souza and Tanya Browne’s Mayfield Stables, John Bourke’s Hyde Park Stud, Dylan and Oisin Browne of Browne Brothers Bloodstock, Brendan Holland’s Grove Stud, Katie Walsh’s Greenhills Farm, Emmanuel and Leona Hughes of San Antone Lodge, Johnny Hassett’s Bloodstock Connection, Ger and Yvonne Kennedy’s Sherbourne Lodge, Willie Browne’s Mocklershill, Joseph Quinn’s Ballycullen Stables and Jim McCartan’s Gaybrook Lodge.
The final day is devoted to breeding stock and horses in training.

The breeding section includes mares in foal to Doctor Dino, Goliath Du Berlais, Montmartre and No Risk At All as well as Almanzor, Galiway, Torquator Tasso, The Grey Gatsby and Waldgeist on the flat.

NH stores
Fastorslow is not the only recent big race jumps winner bought as a store at the Arqana Summer Sale. This year’s Cheltenham Festival scorer Maskada, along with fellow graded race winners Stolen Silver and Faivoir, were also discovered here.
