IF you are considering buying a 4x4 to tow a horsebox you need to look at another option - a van-based motorised horsebox.
There are significant advantages in using a van based horsebox, such as the Equi-Trek range sold by Finlay Horseboxes in Naas, Co KIldare.
These motorised horseboxes are rated from 3.5 tonnes and up to 5 tonnes. The smaller 3.5 tonnes versions can be driven on a B driver’s licence of a provisional licence with a qualified driver accompanying.
This means that there is no need to complete an E trailer licence driving test. This option can suit families involved in the horse sector, allowing most of the family members to take turns at driving.
They offer easy driving, with relatively good fuel economy and good driving comfort. They are also easier to reverse for some drivers, which can be a real bonus. Most are fitted with a reversing camera for additional reversing ease.
When you look at the overall cost of buying a modern 4x4 and a quality horsebox, the option of the motorised horsebox can be a more competitive option. With relatively low use levels they will retain their value over the years with lower ownership costs due to ease of servicing.
The downside of this choice is the lack of 4x4 ability. These are typically front wheel drive vans and with the weight on the rear may not be very effective in difficult field conditions.
