Sprint stakes winner for Farhh

Dalham Hall Stud's Farhh (by Pivotal) has had fewer representatives than many other third-crop sires but broke new ground in France on Sunday when getting his first stakes-winning sprinter.

His Derby-placed first-crop son Dee Ex Bee is a talented stayer, Nocturnal Fox and Wells Farhh Go are capable middle-distance performers, whereas daughter Move Swiftly won last month's Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes over a mile at Ascot and King Of Change was runner-up in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May.

But Far Above, a seventh individual stakes winner for his sire, won the Listed Qatar Prix Kistena over six furlongs at Deauville and the James Tate-trained three-year-old holds entries in a string of top sprints, including the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and Group 1 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes.

He is also engaged in this month's Group 2 Friarstown Stud Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh and early August's Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood, and it catches the eye that all of these top events are over the minimum trip.

Far Above made a winning debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket in April, was fourth in a listed contest over that same course and distance a month later and then ran away with a six-furlong novice event on soft ground at Windsor. These plus his listed success are his only starts to date.

The colt was bred by Mohamed Abdul Malik, made 18,000gns from Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale before being sold on for 105,000gns at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale, and he is the first foal of Dorraar (by Shamardal).

She is a winning daughter of Dorrati (by Dubai Millennium), who is an unraced half-sister to Benbatl's (by Dubawi) Group 1-winning dam Nahrain (by Selkirk), and the next dam is the Group 1 Oaks runner-up Bahr (by Generous).

So how is Far Above a sprinter?

Farhh is out of the middle-distance Group 1 winner Gonbarda (by Lando), was a top-class mile-to-10-furlong horse, and is a son of Pivotal (by Polar Falcon). Dorraar is a daughter of Shamardal (by Giant's Causeway), who was also a top mile-to-10-furlong horse, and both of these outstanding stallions have got their Group 1 stars at anywhere from five to 12 furlongs.

It would seem that the speed influence of Far Above's grandsires Pivotal and Shamardal has combined in this young colt and that will make him a very interesting prospect going forward.

Group 2 win for Gleneagles colt

Coolmore Stud's classic-winning miler Gleneagles (by Galileo) has a Group 2 winner in his first crop following the narrow victory of Royal Lytham in the Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained juvenile was only seventh in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on his previous start but made a winning debut at Navan the time before.

He was bred in France by SARL Haras du Logis Saint Germain, made €180,000 at the Arqana Deauville August yearling sale, and is the third foal of the pattern-placed seven-furlong listed scorer Gotlandia (by Anabaa). His grandam, Grenade (by Bering), is a full-sister to the Group 1 Fillies' Mile winner Glorosia.

Gleneagles's early runners also include Listed Windsor Castle Stakes winner Southern Hills, Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes runner-up Precious Moments, and Listed Chesham Stakes third Highland Chief.

He is out of the outstanding broodmare You'resothrilling – a full-sister to multiple champion sire Giant's Causeway (by Storm Cat) and to the dam of multiple Group 1 star Decorated Knight (by Galileo) – and remains one of the most exciting young stallions to go to stud in recent years.

First stakes winner for Cable Bay

Highclere Stud's Cable Bay (by Invincible Spirit) added his name to the freshman sires with a stakes winner in 2019 when Liberty Beach easily won the Listed Chasemore Farm Dragon Stakes over five furlongs on fast ground at Sandown last Friday.

The John Quinn-trained filly's only defeat in four starts is her fourth-place finish to Raffle Prize in last month's Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, and her entries include the Group 2 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York.

Philip Wilkins's homebred is the second foal of a five-furlong winner called Flirtinaskirt (by Avonbridge) and that half-sister to juvenile Group 3 scorer La Rioja (by Hellvelyn) comes from a branch of the prolific Group 1 family of Green Desert (by Danzig).

Cable Bay, who won the Group 2 Challenge Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, is one of three stakes winners for his dam, Rose De France (by Diktat), and his grandam is Cherokee Rose (by Dancing Brave), the dual Group 1-winning sprinter whose half-brother Volksraad (by Green Desert) was a multiple champion sire in New Zealand.

Noble Mission showing promise

Frankel's multiple Group 1-winning full-brother Noble Mission (by Galileo) stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky and has caught the eye with his first crop.

His classic-placed son Code Of Honor added Saturday's Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes over a mile at Belmont Park to his earlier Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes victory at Gulfstream Park, and Spanish Mission landed the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes on Thursday.

The latter is trained by David Simcock, was bred by St Elias Stables LLC and is a $125,000 graduate of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

He was an easy winner at Chelsford on the second of two starts at two, was a neck runner-up in a listed contest at Goodwood in May, and his four-length victory at Newmarket came on just his fifth start.

He is a half-brother to the six-furlong listed scorer and Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Mokarris (by More Than Ready) and out of Limonar (by Street Cry), who was a four-length winner of a mile listed contest at Saint-Cloud.

The mare's half-brother Talco (by Pivotal) won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes at Santa Anita, she is out of a half-sister to the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas scorer Bachelor Duke (by Miswaki), and this is a branch of the family of Group 1 stars such as Fatherland (by Sadler's Wells), King Pellinore (by Round Table), Thatch (by Forli), and Sadler's Wells (by Northern Dancer), among others.

Camelot strikes again

The eldest offspring of Coolmore Stud's multiple classic star Camelot (by Montjeu) include last year's Group 1 Irish Derby winner Latrobe and Grade 1 Belmont Oaks scorer Athena, and he took his tally of stakes winners to 19 when Downdraft landed the Listed Lenebane Stakes over 12 furlongs at Roscommon on Monday evening.

The Joseph O'Brien-trained colt, also a four-year-old, has now won five of his 14 starts and he holds an entry in next month's £1 million Sky Bet Ebor Handicap at York.

He was bred by Airlie Stud, made €55,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2016, and is out of Cinnamon Rose (by Trempolino). That makes him a half-brother to the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and multiple middle-distance blacktype heroine Chelsea Rose (by Desert King).

She came within a neck of beating Alexander Goldrun in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh, her top daughter is the Group 1-placed pattern-winning sprinter Thawaany (by Tamayuz), and her star son Kew Gardens (by Galileo) won both the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and Group 1 St Leger Stakes last year.

That Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old was a half-length runner-up to Defoe in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom last time out and his entries include the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Group 1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger.
