THE stakes-placed Pelerin gave her future paddocks value a tremendous boost when winning the Listed Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Cooley Fillies Stakes over a mile at Dundalk last Friday, her second win from two tries on an artificial track.
The chesnut was bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd, she is trained by Marco Botti, she carries the colours of Newsells Park Stud, and it will be interesting to see if stays in training next year.
A daughter of the hugely successful Kildangan Stud stallion Shamardal (by Giant’s Causeway), she is the second foal out of Fragrancy (by Singspiel) and she has now gone one better than her dam, whose sole piece of blacktype came when a half-length runner-up to Barshiba in the Listed Severals Stakes over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in 2008.
Fragrancy’s first foal is Masarah (by Cape Cross), who was third in the Listed Fleur de Lys Stakes at Lingfield last year, and who had earlier missed out on Group 1-placing when a head behind the third place finisher in Certify’s renewal of the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot.
Fragrancy’s third foal is a juvenile filly called Hint Of Pink (by Teofilo), for whom Mark Johnston paid 100,000gns at Newmarket last year, she had a Poet’s Voice (by Dubawi) filly in 2013, and a son of Aqlaam (by Oasis Dream) in April.
There is no surprise in the early success being enjoyed by Fragrancy at stud as, not only is she a full-sister to the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy runner-up Jathabah, but her winning dam Zibet (by Kris) is bred on similar lines to the triple classic heroine and classic producer Oh So Sharp (by Kris).
The 1985 Fillies’ Triple Crown heroine, dam of the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Rosefinch (by Blushing Groom) and of Group 1 St Leger winner Shantou’s (by Alleged) Grade 2-winning dam Shaima (by Shareef Dancer), was a half-sister to Roussalka (by Habitat).
Winner of the Group 2 Coronation Stakes and two runnings of the Group 2 Nassau Stakes, Roussalka is the dam of the Group 2 Sun Chariot Stakes winner Ristna (by Kris), and she is the mare from whom the Group 1 stars Ameerat (by Mark Of Esteem) and Collier Hill (by Dr Devious) descend.
Roussalka’s unraced full-sister Oh So Hot is the fourth dam of Pelerin.
Zibet, her grandam, is a half-sister to a pair of stakes-placed winners, but more notable is that she is a half-sister to Lady Zonda (by Lion Cavern), who is the dual-winning dam of Hibaayeb (by Singpsiel), and that Group 1 star is quite closely related to the dam of Pelerin.
Hibaayeb was a leading juvenile in Europe, winning the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile after being runner-up in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes. The following year she was third in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary and won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes before going to the USA where she added the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Hollywood Park.
There are many other stakes and pattern winners in the various branches of this family, including the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap scorer Bribon (by Mark Of Esteem), and all of this makes Pelerin a very valuable filly who could have a notable career at stud whenever her racing days come to an end.
