CHURCHILL made an eye-catching start to his stallion career, featuring among the leading freshmen sires of 2021 and supplying a double-digit tally of winners that included six blacktype earners; three won listed races.
Since then his reputation has grown, and his first two crops include a pair of classic winners. His brilliant Aga Khan-bred son Vadeni, who has just commenced stallion duties, was the European champion three-year-old. His wins included the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby, Group 1 Eclipse Stakes, and he was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He was a member of Churchill’s first European crop.
A second crop member, Blue Rose Cen was a champion juvenile in France and a classic winner last season. Her eight victories include the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches-French 1000 Guineas, Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac, Group 1 Prix de Diane-French Oaks and the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera.
Down under, Churchill’s first Australian crop is headed by Attrition, successful in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield, and a close runner-up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington.
With some 18 stakes winners already under his belt, Churchill is also sire of The Foxes. That winner of the Group 2 Dante Stakes and Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes travelled to the USA and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby.
Churchill is a son of the phenomenal Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), whose stallion sons feature many who have themselves gone on to become Group 1 sires, and notable among them are Frankel, Teofilo, New Approach, Australia and Nathaniel. There is a double-digit number of Galileo stallions with at least one top-level winner.
Churchill is a full-brother to champion two-year-old filly Clemmie (Galileo) and Group 3 winner Blenheim Palace (Galileo). Clemmie won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and last year she produced her first stakes winner, Unless (Justify).
Clemmie and Churchill are out of the juvenile Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes-placed stakes winner Meow (Storm Cat), and she is a daughter of Airwave (Air Express).
That champion juvenile filly in England was by a leading miler, but excelled as a sprinter, winning the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and Group 2 Temple Stakes, and was placed in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, Group 1 July Cup and Group 1 Sprint Cup. Among Airwave’s seven winning offspring were the pattern winner Aloof (Galileo) and the stakes winner and Group 2-placed Keats (Galileo).
Airwave’s ill-fated half-sister Jwala (Oasis Dream) won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, whereas another half-sister, Vasilia (Dansili), is the dam of the dual Group 1 sprint star Dream Of Dreams (Dream Ahead).
Churchill was champion at two and three, a Group 1 National Stakes (beating Mehmas) and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes (beating Blue Point) victor who went on to take both the Group 1 2000 Guineas from Barney Roy and Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas beating Thunder Snow, before chasing home Ulysses in the Group 1 Juddmonte International.
