THE victory of Pierre Lapin in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes last summer was significant on several fronts.
He is an exciting and as yet undefeated colt and he is a half-brother to the sprint star Harry Angel (by Dark Angel) who covered 139 mares in his first season at Dalham Hall Stud.
However, for the purpose of this review his importance lies in being a first-crop son of Cappella Sansevero. That Showcasing (by Oasis Dream) horse is the first son of his sire with runners, and his big result augurs well for the prospects of those following him.
Showcasing’s Tasleet covered 107 mares in his first season at Nunnery Stud, Ballyhane Stud’s newest recruit Soldier’s Call is reportedly proving very popular and Advertise is set for a busy first term at the National Stud in Newmarket.
A £60,000 graduate of the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale in Doncaster, Advertise was trained by Martyn Meade and earned over £900,000 in a 10-race career. He made a winning debut, was runner-up to Calyx in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, won the Group 2 July Stakes and Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, and then chased home Too Darn Hot in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Advertise was unplaced in the 2000 Guineas but bounced back to take the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. Then he chased home Ten Sovereigns in the Group 1 July Cup and landed the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville.
The triple Group 1 star represents a branch of the powerful Green Desert (by Danzig) line and he is the better of two winners from the first three foals of Furbelow (by Pivotal).
That mare is a sister to a listed winner and a three-parts sister to Adorn (by Kyllachy), the dam of two notably speedy sons. Saayerr (by Acclamation) won the Group 2 Richmond Stakes and his half-brother Ornate (by Bahamian Bounty), an eight-time five-furlong scorer with over £240,000 in earnings, was runner-up to Gutaifan in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes and to Brando in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes and finished third to Battaash in last year’s Group 2 King George Stakes.
Red Tiara (by Mr Prospector), the grandam of Advertise, is a three-parts sister to the notable Japanese sprinter Meiner Love (by Seeking The Gold), who won the Sprinters Stakes (then local Group 1 status only) before going on to sire a handful of blacktype scorers among a total of around 140 winners.
It’s no surprise, therefore, that Advertise was a sprinter, and yet his third dam was a mile star. Heart Of Joy (by Lypheor) was second to Salsabil in the Group 1 1000 Guineas and to In The Groove in the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas and her career tally of 10 wins featured a Grade 2 handicap at Del Mar.
Advertise’s pedigree suggests that he will sire plenty of milers as well as the inevitable sprinters.
