HOLY Roman Emperor (Danehill) was a dual Group 1 star as a juvenile and he has 14 top-level winners among an overall tally of 90 blacktype scorers including Mongolian Khan (Australian Derby, New Zealand Derby), Rollout The Carpet (New Zealand 1000 Guineas), Well Timed (Preis der Diana), plus runaway 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen.
Juvenile Group 1 winner Morandi, dual Group 2 scorer Banimpire, and Group 3 Jersey Stakes winner Ishvana were runners-up in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby, Irish Oaks, and Irish 1000 Guineas respectively. The classic list also features Romanised, the Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas victor whose first foals are arriving now.
The former Ken Condon trainee made a winning debut over six furlongs at Navan in April of his two-year-old season and chased home Masar, the future Guineas-placed runaway Craven Stakes winner who won the Derby, in the Group 3 Solario Stakes.
Romanised’s first try at a mile was in the Curragh classic which he won by two and a quarter lengths from U S Navy Flag and, aside from three drops to seven furlongs, he remained at a mile for the rest of his career. Two of those seven-furlong runs were the back-to-back editions of the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes that he won at the Curragh, taking the prize by a length as a four-year-old and returning at five to beat Lancaster House by almost two lengths.
Romanised beat Shaman by one and a quarter lengths to win the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois a few weeks before a somewhat controversial edition of the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Race favourite Romanised went to the front over a furlong out and was quickly joined by Circus Maximus for what became a sustained battle to the line.
The other colt drifted to his left, carrying Romanised with him, and the margin between them was only a nose at the finish, in favour of the Ballydoyle bay. They were followed across the line by Line Of Duty, plus the classic winners Olmedo and Phoenix Of Spain, and an appeal failed to change the outcome.
Romanised, among a growing number of European seven-figure earners on the track, has stakes-winning siblings in Rock Of Romance (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Fictional Account (Stravinsky), and he is out of a full-sister to the Group 1-placed Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes winner Sights On Gold (Indian Ridge).
Their half-brother Simple Exchange (Danehill) was a pattern-placed juvenile stakes winner in Ireland before adding the Grade 2 American Derby at Arlington, whereas Designs On Rome was a multiple Group 1-star in Hong Kong. That Holy Roman Emperor gelding can be described as a three-parts brother to Romanised.
There are plenty of other stakes winners to be found as you go further back on the page. His fourth dam is a half-sister to Group 1 sire Taufan (Stop The Music), and it’s a branch of the famous family of El Gran Senor (Northern Dancer), Try My Best (Northern Dancer), Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), and many more.
