DANZIG (by Northern Dancer) was one of the greatest and most influential stallions of all time and although many of his sons got Group 1 winners of their own at stud, two went on to forge dynasties: Danehill and Green Desert.

Green Desert’s sons include the leading sires Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit and Oasis Dream, each of whom is now getting star stallion sons of their own, and his other sons with Group 1 scorers to their name include Desert Prince, Byron, Desert Style and, of course, the multiple New Zealand champion sire Volksraad.

He has various other sons who have got stakes-winning progeny and they include Kheleyf, a horse who is established as a source not only of speedy blacktype horses but as one of the most prolific winner-getters in Europe.

His yearlings made up to €85,000 in 2014, his foals made up to 47,000gns, he was among the leading sires of last season by the number of individual winners and by races won, and he already has a string of winners to his name in 2015.

His 17 blacktype scorers include the Group 2-winning sprinters Penny’s Picnic (dam by Kingmambo) and Sayif (dam by Rudimentary), both of whom are in the early stages of their own stallion careers.

Penny’s Picnic, who won the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte, the Group 3 Prix Eclipse and the Listed Prix La Fleche, stands at Haras du Hoguenet and his first foals are arriving now.

Sayif won the Group 2 Diadem Stakes, his many pattern placings included the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, and the Llety Farms sire will have yearlings on offer in the autumn.

Kheleyf’s Group 3 scorers Majestic Queen (dam by Danehill) and Percolator (dam by Common Grounds) were also sprinters, while Charlie Em (by Pivotal), a US Grade 3 scorer over a mile, won a listed contest over 12 furlongs.

His long list of listed scorers include the Group 1 Prix Morny third Vladimir (dam by Barathea) and his even longer list of stakes placed horses include the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up Big Time (dam by Green Dancer) and the juvenile Group 2 runners-up Ascot Glory (dam by Lake Coniston), Blockade (dam by Barathea) and Reignier (dam by Komaite).

This level of success is no surprise for not only was this son of Green Desert runner-up in the Group 3 Norfolk Stakes as a juvenile, and a Group 2-placed winner of the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at three, but he comes from the famous stallion-producing family of Encosta De Lago (by Fairy King), Flying Spur (by Danehill), Holy Roman Emperor (by Danehill), L’Enjoleur (by Buckpasser), and Night Shift (by Northern Dancer).

Of those, all but Night Shift appear under branches of the third generation of the family as Kheleyf’s third dam is the champion Fanfreluche (by Northern Dancer), who was Night Shift’s full-sister.

Kheleyf is out of Society Lady (by Mr Prospector), which makes him a full-brother to the ill-fated Group 2 Lowther Stakes heroine and juvenile filly champion Bint Allayl.

His dam is a half-sister to the Grade 1-placed dual juvenile pattern winner Time Bandit (by Time For A Change), who sired some speedy stakes winners in the USA, and his grandam is the dual Canadian champion La Voyageuse (by Tentam), a Canadian Oaks heroine who notched up a remarkable 26 wins on the track.

Kheleyf is a Green Desert horse from a famous sire-producing family, and he has proved his ability to get stakes and pattern winners, juveniles, sprinters and milers, a high number of winners to runners, and plenty who become prolific on the track.
