WORKFORCE looked star material from the day he first stepped onto the racecourse. The first phase of his stallion career yielded earners of more than £7 million for the Timeform 133-rated champion, and he is now in Ireland and at the start of what could be a big future as a National Hunt sire.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the Juddmonte-bred was a six-length winner of his only start at two, chased home subsequent Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco in the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York first time out at three, then stormed home at Epsom to take the Group 1 Derby by seven lengths, one of the most impressive performances in that classic’s long history.

He added the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and, from four starts at four, he won the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, was a half-length runner-up to So You Think in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, and chased home Nathaniel in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

His Japanese-born crops have yielded some blacktype horses, and the now Knockhouse Stud-based horse has his first Irish-born foals on the ground.

He is the best son of Group 1 2000 Guineas winner King’s Best (by Kingmambo), a stallion who can be described as being a three-parts brother to Arc heroine and phenomenal broodmare Urban Sea (by Miswaki) ¬ the dam of Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells), Sea The Stars (by Cape Cross) and Black Sam Bellamy (by Sadler’s Wells).

One could see some of their daughters and granddaughters heading Workforce’s way. Not only would their foals be inbred to Urban Sea’s dam Allegretta (by Lombard), but some would also have a duplicate cross of Sadler’s Wells (by Northern Dancer) – the broodmare sire of Workforce. What’s more, in addition to mares from all of the other major National Hunt sires, one could also see many of those good Flemensfirth ones heading his way too, resulting in foals that would show a 3x4 cross to that horse’s sire, Alleged (by Hoist The Flag).

Workforce’s dam Soviet Moon is a full-sister to classic star and notable National Hunt stallion Brian Boru (Sub Lieutenant, Fox Appeal, Bold Sir Brian, Shotgun Paddy, Next Sensation, Youcantcallherthat, etc) and three-parts sister to classic-placed Group 2 scorer and young Burgage Stud stallion Sea Moon (by Beat Hollow) - all of them out of Group 3 Park Hill Stakes heroine Eva Lua (by Alleged).

Workforce clearly has a tremendous amount of potential in his new role.
