THE Irish Equine Veterinary Association recently staged its inaugural Breeding Symposium at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny for breeders active in both the sport horse and thoroughbred sectors. The purpose of the symposium (pictured above) was to promote the latest in evidence-based medicine and facilitate networking between breeders and the Irish equine veterinary community.
A panel of experts delivered a series of talks and presentations to an enthusiastic audience of over 75 breeders. The topics presented included biosecurity, epigenetics, hoof care and disease surveillance updates, aimed at preparing those in attendance for the 2025 breeding season.
Breeders were also given the opportunity to attend a complimentary and very informative parasitology workshop, delivered by veterinarian Dr Nicola Walshe. Following the presentations, breeders were encouraged to network with one another and the veterinarians in attendance over supper.
IEVA vice-chair Niamh Lewis said: “We were delighted with the turnout of breeders, all of whom were very enthusiastic and engaged throughout the evening. IEVA is already making plans to expand on this for next year.”
Thanks were expressed to speakers David Beehan (DAFM), Alan Creighton (Irish Equine Centre), Nicole Groyer (Connolly’s Red Mills), Jennie Henderson (Ballylinch Stud), Niamh Lewis (UCD School of Veterinary Medicine) and Martin Payne (farrier), along with industry stakeholders and sponsors Connolly’s Red Mills, Coolmore Stud, Telenostic and Tattersalls Ireland.
