QUEEN’S VASE (LISTED)

RYAN Moore was the name on everyone’s lips as he snatched his ninth win of the week in the very last race of the day at Royal Ascot yesterday to earn himself a place in racing’s history annals.

With Moore having some close calls in earlier races yesterday but no real luck, it came down to the wire in the last race yesterday and Aloft delivered in style. Moore was mobbed by the press to huge cheers from the crowd.

The Ballydoyle number one became the most successful Royal Ascot winning jockey of modern times when guiding the Aidan O’Brien-trained Aloft to win the final race on the penultimate day of Royal Ascot. In doing so, he surpassed the records set by Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery.

A delighted Moore said as he was being led in: “I’m very lucky, very lucky to ride such good horses.”

Coolmore’s John Magnier paid tribute to Moore as did Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the trio joking that the top jockey would “need a sense of humour’’ to work with them.

And more may yet come for Ryan in the Ballydoyle colours today.

Moore rode his eighth winner of the week on Ballydoyle’s War Envoy in the Britannia Stakes on Thursday, matching the totals of Lester Piggott in 1965 and 1975 and Pat Eddery in 1989. Both men’s achievements came before the fixture expanded from four to five days in 2002.

The best previous score by a jockey at Royal Ascot was 12, set by Fred Archer in 1878. Another 19th century celebrity, Nat Flatman, rode 11 winners at the meeting in 1847.
