GOLFERS are invited to take part in the Pat Smullen Golf Classic at Killeen Castle, Dunsany, Co Meath, on Monday week, July 1st.
The annual event is a fundraiser for the Drogheda Memorial Fund, a charity established to give financial relief to current and former trainers and jockeys who have fallen on hard times, or their widows/widowers or partners.
Income for the fund is derived from deductions from the annual licence fee paid by trainers and deductions from the annual licence fee paid by qualified riders.
Caroline Corballis, a member of the Drogheda Memorial Fund committee, said: “The fund is a huge help and lifeline to people who have been left in difficult circumstances. When we receive a request for support we normally arrange for a social worker to visit the applicant and make an assessment.”
Donations or bequests to the fund from members of the public are welcome but the annual golf classic remains an important source of income for the fund.
A team of four for the stableford competition costs €1,200 and includes dinner at 7pm. The event has a shotgun start at 1.30pm (soft spikes only) and registration starts at noon. Tee boxes can be sponsored for €200 each and smaller sums are also welcome.
