KICKING off the season after the winter break, the sport horse sales get underway at Cavan next Wednesday. Commencing at around 11am, this one day edition offers a mixed catalogue which is highlighted by a selection of horses and ponies selling under the ‘Premier Competition’ banner. Among these are proven schoolmasters with a wealth of mileage as well as some younger performers with their futures ahead of them. The remaining lots offer customers a varied choice of horses with hunting and general-purpose form, and while it is early in the year to attract a major three and four-year-old entry, there are a few individuals forward.
The list of covering sires is diverse, but standing numerically with four progeny on offer is the enduringly popular Vivant Van de Heffinck. Others represented by two lots are Hold Up Premier, Lagans OBOS Quality and Sligo Candy Boy.
Ponies
Lot 5 Simply Marigold, reg 7yo b m 148cms by Moyan Mirah (dam by Dance With Destiny). The first of the eye catchers and one of 35 ponies on offer, this mare is described as a very athletic, scopey pony who is only for sale as her rider is out of the age group, Having competed up to 1.10m level, she also taken part in pony club activities and has hunted.
Lot 19 Maxi, reg 13yo gr m 145cms (no recorded breeding). The complete all-rounder, Maxi has successfully competed in events, show jumping competitions, tetrathlon and the Tattersalls championships. Having been campaigned under SJI rules in 2019, she subsequently evented to win the area title at Stradbally. A good hunter, and one who knows her job inside out, she is a willing ride and completely genuine.
Lot 25 Earl Grey, reg 7yo gr g 142cms by Earl Of Kilmore out of Ballykieran Lady. For those looking for a proven hunter, this full Connemara gelding has hunted with the Donegal Harriers for two seasons. Ridden by a twelve-year-old girl, he has also competed in training shows.
Premier ponies
Lot 20 Pringle Kilmally, reg 17yo dn g 128cms (no recorded breeding). The first offering from the premier performance group is this school master with a career total of 190 SJI points to date. Currently competing and happy to jump up to 70cms, he is now ready to introduce his next little jockey to the show jumping ranks.
Lot 24 Blakeneys Lightening, reg 6yo gr g 127cms (no recorded breeding). Described as having a huge personality and a firm favourite around the yard, this gelding won the 70cms final at Mullingar. He is also well hunted, having followed the West Waterford and Glasson Farmers hounds on many occasions.
Lot 31 The Little Farrier, reg 12yo gr m 148cms by Josie Jump out of Farriers Friend (Tidaro). Registered and measured with the FEI, this grade A show jumper has returned to work having bred a foal last year. She has accumulated over 300 SJI points in classes up to 1.20m level and has also evented.
Lot 35 SNS Melody, reg 7yo pd m 128cms (no recorded breeding). Probably the stand out pony in the group in the sector, and described as being ‘one of the best under 10 ponies in the country’, Melody has a career total of 553 SJI points to date. Brave and careful, and super against the clock, she has won and been placed in numerous classes including the Balmoral qualifier in Mullingar last year and the Munster U10 Championship in 2023.
Competition horses and hunters
Lot 41 Whitegate Junior, reg 12yo gr g 170cms by Purple Son out of Judys Diamond (Doranstown Hallo). This Irish Draught sired all-rounder/hunter has whipped in to the Sligo and Leitrim Harriers for the past two years. Good to cross any type of country, he has also competed in training shows.
Lot 61 Drumbore Grey, reg 7 yo gr m 168cms (no recorded breeding). Described as a flashy Irish style mare, this proven performer has hunted for two seasons and has carried the whipper in. She will cross any country and, ridden by a sixteen-year-old girl, has also competed in events and training shows.
Lot 65 Georgies Wonder, reg 7yo gr g 168cms. (no recorded breeding). A seasoned gentleman’s hunter with both the Ballymacad and Meath foxhounds, the very experienced Georgies Wonder has put in over 40 days hunting over the past two seasons.
Lot 82 Mosstown Polly, reg 5yo b m 160cms by Vivant Van de Heffinck out of Moydaw Lass (Pacino). A quality filly with 6 SJI points, Polly qualified for four-year old final in the Portmore winter championship in 2024. Now ready to progress further as either a show jumper or event horse.
Lot 86 Kinard Quare Times, reg 5yo b g 172cms by Let the Lion Roar out of Kinard Hill Girl (Errigal Flight). This traditionally bred gelding is currently competing in 1m classes and has won 8 SJI points to date. Fully warranted, and bred to excel in either discipline, he is a half-brother to Nicholas Dello Joio’s 1.60m jumper Columbcille de Reve.
Premier horses
Lot 38 Drumgill Quick Flick, reg 16yo b m 168cms by Hold Up Premier out of Drumgill Quick (dam’s sire not recorded). A very experienced campaigner, this mare has competed in all equestrian disciplines. For the past five years she has carried a teenager to success in pony club competitions, qualifying for the national pony club championships in showjumping, dressage and combined training. She has also been a member of many successful inter-schools show jumping teams and has hunted.
Lot 42 Larkhill La Cruise, 11yo gr g 174cms by Cruising out of Larkhill Ladette (Welcome Flagmount). Having competed to 130cms level and carrying a total of 172 SJI points, this well-bred individual is also a very experienced hunter. He has followed the Louth, Wards, Fingal and Oriel hounds fir three seasons, and would suit either an ambitious rider or an amateur. One of the increasingly few Cruising sons still competing, he is a three parts brother to the multiple grand prix winning Larkhill Cruiser (John Floody).
Lot 43 Moylaw Kieran, reg 11 yo b g 167cms by Le One out of Moylaw Dainty (dam’s sire not recorded). Carrying 61 SJI points in classes up to 1.20m, and a finalist (1.20m) at the Cavan November Festival in 2023, Kieran is an ideal amateur or Children on Horses prospect. He is well established on the flat, and is balanced and brave.
Lot 47 Isle De Capri, reg 9 yo b m 170cms by Capri Van Overis out of Chatswoth Tasset (Tasset). A well related, scopey mare with 108 SJI points in classes up to 1.20m, this experienced individual is thought to be an ideal amateur ride. A been there and done that type, she is easy in all respects and, as a half-sister to the CCI3* event horse Class Move, has paddock value when her competing days are over.
Lot 53 Assagart Hopes are High, reg 8yo ch g 165cms by Castleforbes Lord Lancer out of My Only Hope (Big Sink Hope). The winner of 38 SJI points to date, this smart, well-schooled gelding has competed to 1.20m level and has been schooled across country.
Lot 66 Farrelly's Contessa, reg 6yo ch m 168cms by Tyson out of Farrellys Vision (Classic Vision). The winner of numerous HSI/DAFM show jumping finals and carrying 68 SJI points, this professionally produced mare has competed to1.20m level. She is a half-sister to the CCI2* event horse Farrellys Tavern.
Lot 77 Daberblue, reg 6yo b g 168cms by Plot Blue out of Daberlina (Zento). One for the future could be Daberblue, a homebred and home-produced gelding with form at most of the major show centres in Northern Ireland. Already the winner of 28 SJI points, he rides well on the flat proving well balanced and snaffle mouthed. He is thought to have all the attributes to make a show jumper, eventer or working hunter.
Four year-olds
Lot 106 Coilliath George, reg 4 yo gr g 163cms by Centennial out of Coilliath Trix (Steady Cruise). By the thoroughbred sire Centennial, this traditionally bred gelding is riding well on the flat and jumping a course of fences. Now ready to progress further in his competition career.
Lot 109 Kiltubrid Legacy, reg 4yo b m 167cms by Vivant Van de Heffinck out of Kiltubrid Mia (Hannibal Van Overis). A well-bred filly carrying the old Irish blood lines of Diamond Lad, Leabeg and Clover Hill. From a prolific winning family, the second dam is a sibling to Shannondale Trueman (1.60m) as well as from the family of the event horses Dream On Doni (CCI3*) and Barnaboy Freeman (CICO3*).
