Roveagh Lodge Stud, Kilcolgan

SITUATED between Loughrea and Galway city, Roveagh Lodge Stud stands three versatile stallions. The crown jewel is the illustrious The Gurkha, son of the legendary Galileo.

In 2016 The Gurkha won the Poule d’Essai des Poulains by over five lengths. He demonstrated his willful attitude by adding another Group 1, the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, to his record later that year, reinforcing his reputation as a formidable miler on the international stage.

The Gurkha’s progeny are a testament to his versatility and temperament. His progeny have excelled across both codes of Irish racing, with his highest rated progeny on the flat, Imperial Fighter, placed in the Irish 2000 Guineas in 2022.

In the National Hunt domain, Nicky Henderson has the exciting two-mile hurdler Luccia, Grade 1-placed as a novice at Aintree and winner of the valuable Betfair Handicap Hurdle at Ascot’s pre-Christmas meeting.

Fuisse adds further depth to Roveagh Lodge Stud’s stallion roster. By the top class miler Green Tune and out of Funny Feerie, Fuisse enjoyed a successful racing career which consisted of 14 runs, with seven wins, including the Group 1 Prix du Moulin over one mile. Fuisse also had the class and stamina to stay 10 and a half furlongs when he was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club.

Versatility

Fuisse’s progeny continue to showcase his versatility. His son Tour To Paris won the Group 2 Prix du Gros-Chene over five furlongs. On the other hand, Flegmatik, the classy chaser in training with the Skeltons, was placed in the prestigious Howden Silver Premier Handicap Chase in Ascot in December over three miles.

He has two Group 1-winning half-brothers, Full Of Gold and For Fun. The former excelled on the flat, winning his Group 1 over nine furlongs, while the latter won over a trip of two miles and three furlongs over hurdles. It is no surprise that Fuisse’s versatility has been handed down to his next generation.

Another standout on Roveagh Lodge Stud’s stallion roster is Monitor Closely, a half-brother to the much-missed Mount Nelson. His impressive racing record includes a placed effort in the St Leger and a commanding victory in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes.
