GER O’Neill’s Castlefield Stud in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny, will stand a new stallion for 2022 in Alkumait, a Group 2-winning two-year-old.
Acquired by Capital Bloodstock, Alkumait is a son of Showcasing (Oasis Dream) who was trained by Marcus Tregoning to win the Mill Reef Stakes in 2020. His fee has been set at €5,000 and there is a €100,000 bonus on offer to the connections of the first horse from his first crop to become a blacktype winner as a juvenile.
The bonus scheme covers racing in Ireland, Britain, France and the USA. The breeder will receive €50,000 and the trainer and owner will each receive €25,000.
Alkumait was bred at Whitsbury Manor Stud, home to Showcasing. His dam Suelta is a half-sister to the dam of Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Living In The Past. As a foal he made 150,000gns and his price rose to 220,000gns as a yearling when sold to Shadwell in Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Jack Tuohy, who negotiated the deal, said: “Alkumait was the fastest-ever Mill Reef winner and he is his sire’s fastest two-year-old group race winner at six furlongs. We feel he is a fantastic addition to the Irish sprint stallion ranks as there are limited first-season options for commercial breeders under €10,000.
“We have purchased this horse with the drive of a very capable syndicate behind him, all of whose members are going to send him their best mares. There is also a limited number of breeding rights available in him.”
Explaining the reason for the bonus scheme, Tuohy said: “Prize money has been a problem in Britain and Ireland, and there is very little or no prize money for breeders. We want this horse to work for everyone involved and reward them for their support.”
Alkumait joins Hunting Horn and fellow new recruit Mirage Dancer at Castlefield Stud.
