Cheveley Park Stud have announced their purchase of a share in unbeaten two-year-old Vandeek, who has been retired ahead of joining their roster for the 2025 season.

Owners KHK Racing remain as partners in the son of Havana Grey, who won the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 1 Middle Park last season. Simon and Ed Crisford’s charge finished third on both his starts as a three-year-old, in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes and Group 1 July Cup.

Upon announcing their purchase, Cheveley Park Stud revealed that Vandeek suffered a minor soft tissue injury on his latest start, meaning he would not have enough time to run again this season.

On their exciting addition, Cheveley Park Stud’s Managing Director Chris Richardson said: “Patricia Thompson is delighted to have been able to secure Vandeek, in partnership with Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to stand at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, making this very exciting son of Havana Grey available to British and international breeders and thus further enhancing the long-established history of Cheveley Park Stud standing world class stallions”.

"Great pleasure to train"

His joint trainer, Simon Crisford, added; “Vandeek was a brilliant two-year-old for Sheikh Khalid and his amazing turn of foot set him apart from the others. He had a wonderful temperament and he was such a great pleasure to train.

"His Juddmonte Middle Park victory was sensational and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better winner of that race. He was pure class and it is such a great shame he didn’t have the opportunity to fulfil his potential this year.”

Vandeek emerged as an exciting prospect when producing an impressive display at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, where Glending Stables sold the Maywood Stud-bred grey to Anthony Stroud for 625,000gns.

The sale’s joint top-lot went on to win his first four starts, earning him a rating of 119- the highest achieved by a British-trained juvenile last season.

Vandeek is the highest-rated progeny and sole Group 1 winner by Havana Grey, who has become something of a sire sensation. His flagbearer hails from the family of champion sire and dual Group 1 winner Anabaa.

A fee for Vandeek will be released at a later date.
