A NUMBER of Irish breeders have invested in Highclere Stud stallion Land Force, in the hope that he will prove as successful as the same stud’s Cable Bay, whose progeny excelled in their first season on the track in 2019.

By No Nay Never – whose stud fee this year is €175,000 – Land Force was a €350,000 yearling and was trained by Aidan O’Brien to win the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood as a two-year-old.

He was placed third in the Grop 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and finished fourth in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville. Land Force retired through injury after one start at three years.

His dam Theann was a Group 3 winner and is from the family of Cassandra Go, Magical, Verglas and Photo Call.

Jake Warren of Highclere Stud said: “Cable Bay has been an amazing flagbearer for Highclere Stud. He covered 275 mares in his first two seasons and among the Irish involved in his success were Kildaragh Stud, Bill Dwan, Pier House Stud, Croom House Stud, the Myerscoughs and Baroda Stud. Many of the same breeders are willing to use Land Force as well and we hope to attract lots more with our £750 travel concession for Irish mares.”

Highclere Stud is located “an hour west of Ascot Racecourse” and Warren says it is easy for Irish breeders to access.

By the end of the 2019 turf season Cable Bay had sired 23 individual winners of 36 races, placing him second to Night Of Thunder in the European first season sires’ table, and he was on top in Britain and Ireland. This success was reflected at the yearling sales which saw his progeny average an incredible £118,000 across Goffs and Tattersalls. “That is not a bad return on a covering fee of £6,500,” added Warren.
