LAST Saturday the picturesque Boyne Valley in Meath played host to the highly anticipated Boyne Valley Farrier Competition.
This event marked the first farrier competition staged in the area for over 13 years. The last such event in Meath was organised by David Madden, an Irish Master Farrier who competed on the day, adding a touch of nostalgia to the competition.
Farrier competitions are having a bit of a revival. Byran O’Halloran hosted one in Clifden and Kevin Quigg had an event in Greenvale, Northern Ireland.
The Boyne Valley competition, organised by John Paul Malone, Master Farrier of JPM Farrier, and his third-year apprentice, Killian Moore, brought together both apprentices and master farriers. Competitors showcased their skills across various classes, demonstrating their techniques. The event provided an opportunity for farriers to observe different approaches to the craft and help apprentices to prepare for their exams and, above all, enjoy the spirit of friendly competition.
Among the competitors were two female farriers - Charlie King and Isobel Harmer – a rare sight in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Their participation added an inspiring dimension to the event, not to mention a touch of colour with a pink hammer highlighting the evolving nature of the profession and encouraging more women to pursue careers in farriery.
With the sun shining brightly over Boyne Valley, the day was as much a social gathering as it was a professional event. Spectators, supporters and locals were treated to an impressive display of craftsmanship. From forging horseshoes to intricate shoeing techniques, the competitors displayed the skill and dedication required in this ancient trade.
Killian and John Paul were thrilled with the turnout, particularly given that this was their first time organising such an event. They were also delighted by the generosity of the sponsors who provided funding and prizes for the winners, and by the support from fellow farriers who lent their fires, anvils, and tools for the competition.
Special thanks were extended to the legendary judges: Paul Duddy, who travelled from Strabane with his experience competing at the World Championships in Calgary, and John McLoughlin, who has managed the Irish Master Farriers Team internationally for over 20 years, and who brought a wealth of expertise to judging the competition.
