The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board has opened an investigation into a controversial race at Wexford on Wednesday.

Redwood Queen looked a likely winner of the opening hurdle race on the card until losing his rider Philip Byrnes shortly after they had jumped the final obstacle.

The incident allowed the odds-on favourite Beacon Edge to win. Redwood Queen, trained by the jockey's father Charles Byrnes, had drifted markedly in the betting before the race started.

The raceday stewards reviewed a video of the race and "considered the matter" but took no further action. There is no record of them hearing evidence from the jockey.

On Thursday morning a spokesperson for the IHRB said: "We note the position of the Raceday Stewards following their review of the incident. I can confirm the matter is down for review by and IHRB Senior Racing Official."

Philip Byrnes did not ride in any of the later races at Wexford but is cleared to ride three horses at Limerick on Thursday, all trained by Charles Byrnes.
