ACAPULCO Bay confirmed his debut promise when landing the one-mile maiden race (13:45) at the Curragh on Saturday but Aidan O’Brien’s second string looked just as exciting, writes Page Fuller.

Genealogy is certainly one to keep an eye on next time after this length and three-quarters defeat. He showed signs of greenness out of the stalls, taking 3.19 seconds to reach 20mph which was slower than all bar two of the runners. The winner on the other hand was quickest, only taking 2.44 seconds, and this put Ryan Moore in the prime position to dictate affairs on the front end.

The pace was steady in the early stages and turned into a sprint in the home straight. For any horse to quicken past a horse that is also quickening is a tough task, especially when you aren’t as fast. Acapulco Bay hit a Top Speed of 40.22mph in the second-last furlong and Genealogy only hit 39.78mph. This meant the winner could put some distance between himself and the runner-up whilst Genealogy got caught flat footed.

Genealogy was closing by the end, however, and completed the final furlong in 12 seconds, 0.06 seconds quicker than the winner.

He is entitled to come on for this experience and has proven to be capable of landing a similar contest. His strength at the line also suggests that a step up in trip would be no bother for him either so he certainly looks like another interesting Ballydoyle prospect for the future.
