DYLAN Browne McMonagle was a jockey in form at Fairyhouse on Friday evening, completing a quick double. The first leg came aboard the well supported 11/4 favourite Night Sparkle for owner/trainer Michael O’Callaghan in the La Bucca Restaurants Handicap.

A winner over hurdles last month, the daughter of Postponed landed an easy four-and-a-quarter length success.

“It’s a long time since she ran on the flat,” said O’Callaghan. “We bought her over the winter, with a couple of lads, to have a bit of fun with and make a dual purpose mare out of. She’s won her maiden hurdle and that bit of hurdling has hardened and toughened her up. She has come in her coat in the last three or four weeks and she looks well. We’ll have plenty of fun with her.”

McMonagle completed his brace on 4/5 favourite Rapparee Champ in the following Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden.

Carrying the colours of Rectory Road Holdings Limited, the Joseph O’Brien trained colt got up close home to beat Golden Temple a head.

“I was happy enough the whole way but would rather have had them go a bit faster,” said Browne McMonagle. “He travelled around fine, a little bit on the lazy side like he was the last day, but just off the bend Robbie kicked and my lad just lacked that little bit of experience.

“I loved the way he got through the line and he’s going to improve when he steps up in trip, and he’s only going to learn on the job. I was confident in the last furlong; I got him to change leads again and away he went. He was a good winner at the line.”

Bright future for Cromwell’s filly

GAVIN Cromwell introduced a smart debutante in the shape of Ms Brightside in the opening Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden.

Owned by Nigel O’Hare, the 11/2 chance overcame greenness to score by two and three quarter lengths.

“She was plenty green, I couldn’t believe it because she was professional enough in the barrier trial and we’ve had them away plenty,” said Cromwell. “She did it well. She was a little bit flat footed when they quickened, it just took him a little bit to get her organised but she won well.

“We’ll have a look at the calendar now and see; she could potentially be for sale but if not, she could go for a bit of blacktype somewhere.”

Charming Lady caused something of a mild surprise when defying odds of 33/1 to claim the Chill & Grill At Fairyhouse Handicap for Tom McCourt.

Owned jointly by Elaine Shevlin and Denise McCourt, the filly got up on the line to beat Aussie Girl a short-head.

“She was all wrong in Bellewstown, she had a problem with tying up and it took us a while to get her right,” said McCourt. “We were fairly happy she was right as she did a couple of really good bits of work recently. We were quietly optimistic of a big run. Conor Maxwell had been riding her work and said she was full of speed. We’ll tip away with her.”

Out On Friday won the final race for the second successive week when just holding No Hassle by a head in the Racing Again @Fairyhouse July 12th Handicap.

Philip Byrne reported of his Antony Deegan owned 6/1 winner: “We’re delighted with that again.

“We didn’t have to do much with him during the week, only just freshen him up again for today. The handicapper put him up 14lb and he probably has him now.

“He has a great attitude, he battled back and he did the same in Gowran last year when he won. He’s in the groove now, he loves it. He’s in at Leopardstown next week but I don’t know if he’ll run again after that race. We’ll see what the handicapper says again.”

Rockingham target for Master Matt

MASTER Matt stayed on strongly under Scott McCullagh to win the Race & Stay At Fairyhouse Handicap by a length and a half in the colours of Frank Lynch.

“He’s had his issues over the years, and had a couple of trainers, but we are getting to really know him well now,” said joint-trainer Michael Halford.

“We discovered after we got him that he’s blind in one eye, so I’m sure that didn’t help but he’s getting it together well and ran a blinder here last week. We thought the turning six might suit him as he’s inclined to use too much petrol running in a straight line.

“I stuck him in the Rockingham and we’ll see. Sometimes when you get those horses in winning form you can keep them going.”

Vernet (9/2) upset some better fancied rivals in the Aiden Burns Memorial Race. Hugh Horgan made all on the John Oxley owned winner, having half-a-length in hand at the finish.

“She’s a lovely filly. She got things her own way, travelled very well in front, picked up well off the bend and loved the battle in the straight,” said Horgan. “She seemed to thrive under pressure and was always sticking her nose out to the line.”
