RICHARD Frisby struck for the choicest lot on offer at the Goffs Doncaster British NH Breeders Showcase yesterday when he spent £90,000, a British record for a National Hunt foal, to acquire a son of Blue Bresil from Juliet Minton’s Mill House Stud. The first edition of this sale produced a set of solid returns, with a 77% clearance rate, an average of £19,654 and a median of £15,000.

Runner-up on Thursday in the colt foal class, the homebred is a half-brother to the exciting Speculatrix, and that four-year-old daughter of No Risk At All won on her only start to date, taking the honours in a Punchestown bumper in February for Gigginstown House and trainer Gordon Elliott. Their dam won a bumper for Nicky Henderson and is a half-sister to the smart chasers Pairofbrowneyes and Master Of The Hall, while an unraced half-sister bred Samcro.

“I never thought he’d make that much,” said Juliet Minton. “He had a £40,000 reserve, and thought he might make £60,000, but I never dreamt of £90,000. He’s right up there with the best we’ve ever consigned.”

Within the first hour of trading, Yeo Barton Bloodstock sold a son of Saint Des Saints to Coolmara Stables’ Kieran Mariga for £65,000. The colt’s half-sister Trudie Glen was not beaten far when she was placed on her debut in a bumper in May for Dan Skelton, and they are two of the four foals to date from the three-time winning Kalanisi mare Only For Love, one of which will race for Mariga. That mare’s half-brothers Eva’s Oskar and Amore Alato are both blacktype winners over fences. The colt was bought for resale at three.

The O’Callaghan’s Tally-Ho Stud does not restrict itself to just flat stock, and they were the winning bidders for a son of Golden Horn out of a Getaway half-sister to Grade 2-winning hurdler Akilak, who also placed in the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle. The colt was sold by Outhill Farm on behalf of Willie Jenks for £60,000. “He’s a lovely foal and the one we really wanted,” said Henry O’Callaghan.

Sold as part of the John Lightfoot dispersal, one of the first lots through the ring was a son of Golden Horn, part of the Molland Ridge Stud consignment. Third in the colt foal class, he sold to Mark Dwyer’s Oaks Farm Stables for £47,000. He is the first foal of the winning hurdler Lilly Pedlar, and that daughter of Yeats was placed in a Grade 2 contest. This is the immediate family of the Gold Cup winner Long Run.

Crystal Ocean

Toby Bulgin secured a son of Crystal Ocean out of a winning Turgeon mare for £46,000. A half-brother to a winner, he was sold by Stuart Ross’ Willow Wood Farm, and represented the best price they have ever achieved. Willow Wood Stud will be home to Capri in 2024. Busherstown had to go to £44,000 to acquire a son of Kapgarde from Cobhall Court Stud. The colt is the second produce of a Saint Des Saints daughter if Nikita Du Berlais.

Progeny by Golden Horn were in strong demand, and Aiden Murphy gave £40,000 for one of the last lots of the day, Cobhall Court Stud’s half-brother to the listed hurdle winner Llandinabo Lad. He was sold on behalf of breeder Peter Symonds.

The colt class winner on Thursday, judged by Warren Ewing, Norman Williamson, Mags O’Toole and Sally Aston, was a son of Jack Hobbs out of an unraced Fame And Glory mare. He won £3,000 for breeder Jackie Chugg of Little Lodge Farm, and then sold to Ian Ferguson for £36,000.

Nathaniel filly is best

PEEL Bloodstock offered the second produce of the multiple graded-placed hurdler Shanning on behalf of Future Bloodstock, and the Nathaniel filly was hammered down at £50,000 to BLF Farm. She has a paddock value even if she never raced, her dam being a half-sister to the four-time Grade 1 winner over fences, Allaho.

The Mariga family’s Coolmara Stables spent £44,000 on another daughter of Nathaniel, this time from Goldford Stud. The half-sister to two winners, out of six-time winner Urticaire, also won the class for filly foals on Thursday, netting Sally Aston’s Goldford Stud an additional £3,000 in prize money. The filly’s dam was placed in a Grade 1 hurdle race, and is a half-sister to the Group 1 Arkle Chase winner Trifolium.

Placed third among the fillies on show Thursday, Trull House Stud sold a daughter of Milan, and a granddaughter of Chomba Womba, to Peter Molony’s Rathmore Stud for £35,000. She was offered as part of the Little Lodge Stud draft.

Charles Shanahan combined with Aiden Murphy to purchase Cobhall Court Stud’s Nathaniel filly out of the multiple listed-placed hurdler Omessa Has, herself by Martaline. The pair gave £33,000 for her.
