THE 2023 European yearling sales season kicks off with the prestigious Arqana August Yearling Sale next weekend in Deauville.

Over three days (Friday to Sunday, August 18th to 20th), more than 300 yearlings selected for their exceptional pedigrees and conformations will go under the hammer.

A third of them are half or full siblings to blacktype horses, including 18 brothers or sisters to Group 1 winners, and almost 40% are out of a blacktype winning mare.

Sunday’s session takes place immediately after the running of the Group 1 double-header at Deauville, featuring the Prix Morny and Prix Jean Romanet.

This is the sale where, two years ago, the now unbeaten Ace Impact was sold as a yearling for only €75,000. His sire Cracksman only has one yearling in this year’s sale but it will make a lot more than Ace Impact did as he is a half-brother to the champion two-year-old Native Trail.

Other stallions with progeny in the August Sale include Camelot, Churchill, Dubawi, Frankel, Dark Angel, Galiway, Justify, Kingman, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, New Bay, Night Of Thunder, No Nay Never, Sea The Stars, Siyouni, Starspangledbanner, Wootton Bassett and Zarak, as well as the final crop of yearlings by the late Le Havre and yearlings by the promising young sire Blue Point.

Ballylinch Stud is a regular vendor at this sale and sends a consignment of seven yearlings, including four by Lope De Vega.

Baroda Stud consigns nine (three by Wootton Bassett), and Camas Park sends five, including two by Blue Rose Cen’s sire, Churchill.

Perennial leading vendor Ecurie des Monceaux – vendor of Sottsass and Chicquita - has 35 lots catalogued while Haras d’Etreham – owned by the de Chambure family - offers 26 yearlings for sale.

A full-brother to Sottsass topped last year’s sale when sold to trainer Yoshito Yahagi for €2.1 million. The second highest priced lot was a Dubawi colt bought by Godolphin for €2 million. Now named Ancient Wisdom, he has already won his first two starts and finished third in a listed race at Ascot recently.

The Irish-trained pattern race performers Unquestionable, Vespertilio and Bucanero Forte were all bought at this sale last year.

There is a blank day after the August Yearling Sale concludes and then, after a year’s break, the v.2 Yearling Sale is back on the calendar this year and will take place on Tuesday, August 22nd.

Graduates of this sale include this year’s German 2000 Guineas winner Angers, who cost only €22,000 here in 2021.

The 2023 catalogue numbers 175 lots.
