Conor Quirke and Kathryn Birch of Hunting Hill Stud in north Co Cork had an unforgettable day at Goffs on Tuesday when they sold their Sioux Nation filly foal for €185,000.

The filly is a half sister to listed race winner Majestic Dawn and Group 2-placed Rousing Encore.

The breeders bought the mare Jolie Chanson (by Mount Nelson) for just 3,500gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Sale.

The Sioux Nation foal was purchased by noted pinhookers and breeders Paul and Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud in Co Limerick.

Quirke, who is best known as the buyer of Grade 1 winner Big Evs as a yearling, said: "It's the ultimate compliment for a judge like that to buy your foal. She hasn't put a foot wrong, she vetted well, and all the big buyers were on her. I didn't really believe that price was possible until we were in the back ring."

Birch added: "She was so busy at the door, I was wondering can this filly take any more but she has been a trooper all the way through."

Just a few minutes later, a Sioux Nation colt from the Delaney family's Ballinafad Stud in Co Tipperary was sold for €130,000 to Pattern Bloodstock. The colt is out of a winning full-sister to Group 2 winner and sire Prince Of Lir.

The McStay family's Oaklawn Stud in Kildare sold a Blue Point colt for €175,000 to Goodwill Bloodstock. The colt is out of an unraced Street Cry mare who has bred two winners from four runners.

Killian McStay said: "Delighted we got a homebred sold for such an incredible sum. This foal was very popular with the top-end buyers - I don't think we have ever seen such footfall or as many shows.

"Coming into the sale I thought he was travelling well because the sire has become a top international stallion and he was a very attractive foal. But never in my wildest dreams did I think he would get to that level. Our ceiling was shattered."

William Kennedy and John Wall's Stanley Lodge sold one of the top lots here on Monday and they had a string of big priced foals on Tuesday, headed by a €155,000 colt from the first crop of Blackbeard. The colt is a half-brother to Benevento (by Wootton Bassett) who was a recent listed winner for Amo Racing.

At 6.20pm on Tuesday the clearance rate was running at 76% and the average price was €31,760. The median was €24,000.

The sale continues on Wednesday.
