IDAHO Valley was a debut winner of his four-year-old maiden point-to-point at Tallow in February, and this was the perfect start for the gelding’s sire who is part of the roster at The Beeches Stud.

Last year Idaho’s stock in the sale ring sold for up to €60,000, and his first winner and top-priced sale lot are among his 130-strong first crop. Aidan O’Brien said of the stallion: “Idaho was a very solid, consistent racehorse; sound, clear-winded with a good mind. I think he would have been an impressive winner of the St Leger but for almost getting brought down in the straight and he showed that when winning the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.” .

Idaho was an easy debut winner over a mile at the Curragh at two and fourth in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud a few weeks later.

At three he was placed in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes and Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial before a third-place finish in the Group 1 Derby at Epsom. He was beaten by a total of two and three-quarter lengths by Harzand there, but narrowed that gap to just half a length when runner-up in the Group 1 Irish Derby three weeks later.

Idaho was odds-on when landing the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes in style at York and when unshipping his rider during the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster, while at four he added victory in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He then finished third to the great Enable in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the same course and distance, passing the post four lengths clear of his famous full-brother, Highland Reel.

Raced as a five-year-old, Idaho easily won the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester before finishing fourth to Cracksman in the Group 1 Coronation Cup and third to Stradivarius in both the Group 1 Goodwood Cup and Group 2 Lonsdale Cup.

Highland Reel and Idaho’s pattern-winning full-brother Nobel Prize is at stud in Turkey. Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) is a 10-furlong Group 1 scorer in Australia, whereas half-sister Valdemoro (Encosta De Lago) was narrowly beaten when runner-up in the Group 1 Crown Oaks and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes. Idaho is also a full-brother to the dam of Angel Blue (Dark Angel), a dual Group 1 winner at two in France.

They are all out of Group 1-placed Hveger (Danehill), a full-sister to multiple Group 1 star Elvstroem and half-sister to multiple Group 1 victor Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus). Both of these hoprses have gone on to become Group 1 sires.
