DUAL Derby hero High Chaparral was an outstanding middle-distance horse who stood at Coolmore, shuttled, but died aged just 15.

His 23 Group/Grade 1 winners came from a total of 133 blacktype scorers and featured an array of standout performers in Europe, Canada and Australia plus major winners in New Zealand and the USA. He also made an impact with his sons: Contributor, Dundeel, Redwood, So You Think, Tivaci and Toronado are Group 1 winners who have sired Group 1 winners at stud.

Toronado is the only one of those standing in Europe and in addition to his Group 1-winning Australian sprinter Masked Crusader (dam by Invincible Spirit), he has supplied the Chad Brown-trained Tribhuvan (dam by Next Desert), winner of the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes over 11 furlongs at Monmouth Park in July. Both represent broodmare sires from the Green Desert (Danzig) line.

Lucky Express (dam by Testa Rossa), like Masked Crusader, has seven-figure earnings, was a neck runner-up in a seven-furlong Group 3 handicap at Sha Tin in January and is another with a Danzig-line broodmare sire.

So are his Australian Group 2-scorers Still A Star (dam by Big Brown) and Treasured Star (dam by Casino Prince), Group 3-winner Shelby Sixtysix (dam by Honours List) and European stakes winners Legionario (dam by Dansili), Mouillage (dam by Cape Cross), Stone Tornado (dam by Danehill Dancer) and Wasmya (dam by Danehill Dancer), among others.

The great father-son duo of Sadler’s Wells and Galileo excelled with mares representing Danzig and his sons, so it’s no surprise that Toronado does too. He’s not Danzig exclusive of course. Affair To Remember (Black Hawk), Tactical (Makfi), Toro Strike (Smart Strike) and Senor Toba (Teofilo), for example, represent Nureyev, Dubawi, Mr Prospector and Galileo respectively.

Toronado, a Chesham Stakes and Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner at two, easily beat Havana Gold in the Group 3 Craven Stakes before losing his unbeaten record when fourth to Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas. He was short-headed by that star in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes, beat him in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, and returned at four to add the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. He then chased home Kingman in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes and was runner-up to Charm Spirit in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

Toronado’s 2021 yearlings made up to €140,000 in Deauville, he had a 210,000gns juvenile at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, and three of his southern hemisphere yearlings have fetched AU$400,000 or more at Australia’s major sales in 2022. He looks great value at just €8,000.
