Dawn Rising made it a record 12 Irish-trained winners for the week at Royal Ascot when taking the closing Queen Alexandra Stakes for the unlikely combination of jockey Ryan Moore riding for owner J.P. McManus.

The well-backed 2/1 favourite was trained by Joseph O'Brien, who was having his second success of the week at Ascot.

The winning hurdler was always close to the pace under Moore, who kicked for home off the final turn and his mount kept finding to repel the challenge of The Grand Visir by half a length.

Moore, who ended the week with six winners and the leading jockey title, said: “Joseph had Dawn Rising beautifully prepared for today. He has been jumping and won a graded race over jumps during the winter, and today he got himself into a nice spot and I just gradually built along. It's nice to finish the week with a winner.

"I hadn't really asked him for everything and he was always finding plenty. Joseph's horses can do that."

O’Brien said: “It has been a wonderful week's racing. It’s great to get a couple of winners, and it was a fantastic ride from Ryan.

“This horse is a dour stayer and that is what you need in a race like this. J.P. supports everyone in racing so well and it’s great to get a winner here in his colours."

Ian Williams said of The Grand Visir: “I don't think he can be any more admirable in defeat. He just tries and tries, and that is probably just about a little over five miles he has run this week. He has performed with credit on both occasions this week. He has served his owners and the yard so well and he is a credit to everyone.”
