Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3)

ANDREW Balding’s Chaldean ran out an impressive winner of the Group 3 Acomb Stakes under a positive ride from Ryan Moore and looks a smashing long-term prospect.

The son of Frankel impressed when off the mark on his second start at Newbury, beating a trio of subsequent winners, and he justified sustained market support in winning at 7/2 here, having been more than twice that price in the morning.

Ryan Moore allowed his mount to stride on when others were reluctant to go forward, and he was able to repel the challengers when they came, with the best of them being Michael O’Callaghan’s Indestructible.

The latter was always handy and joined the winner inside the final furlong, only to find Chaldean and Moore in no mood to roll over. The winning margin was half a length, with Oviedo staying on late for third, a further three and a quarter lengths away.

The winner is quite a late foal and, unusually for one running in the Juddmonte colours, he’s not a homebred, costing 550,000gns as a foal from Whitsbury Manor Stud.

He’s related to a several blacktype performers at sprint trips, but shapes as if he will stay a mile when required, and has been quoted for the Dewhurst Stakes, for all his plans remain fluid.
