WHAT do Ambivalent, Complacent, Hartnell, Ridasiyna, Sacred Elixir, Seal Of Approval, and the great Treve all have in common? They are Group 1 winners by sons of the brilliant middle-distance champion and outstanding sire Montjeu (by Sadler’s Wells). More specifically, they are by Derby-winning sons of Montjeu.

Motivator (Ridasiyna, Treve) won the Epsom classic in 2005, Authorized (Ambivalent, Complacent, Hartnell, Seal Of Approval) impressed two years later, also by five lengths, and then Pour Moi (Sacred Elixir) got up close to the line to take the great race in 2011.

Twelve months later the Group 1 2000 Guineas hero Camelot added his name to the roll of honour of what is one of the world’s most famous races, another five-length winner and a fourth Epsom hero for Montjeu.

He extended his winning record to six with an odds-on defeat of Born To Sea in the Group 1 Irish Derby at the Curragh and was again odds-on when losing out to Encke in the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster. Camelot was a Group 1-placed pattern winner as a four-year-old, a Group 1 Racing Post Trophy winner at two, and now he is a freshman sire whose yearlings made up to 400,000gns at auction.

A 525,000gns yearling, Camelot was rated 128 by Timeform, he is out of the Group 3 winner Tarfah (by Kingmambo) and he was not the first classic star in his family.

His grandam Fickle (by Danehill), who is a stakes-winning half-sister to the listed scorers Faru (by Mtoto) and Birdie (by Alhaarth), is a granddaughter of One Over Parr (by Reform), a full-sister to Oaks heroine Polygamy.

Fickle’s siblings also include Fading Light (by King’s Best), who was placed in both the Group 3 Prix Chloe and Prix Vanteaux during her racing days and who has been back in the news over the past 18 months thanks to the exploits of her daughter Fireglow (by Teofilo). That triple stakes winner has been runner-up in each of the Group 3 Musidora Stakes, Prestige Stakes and Sweet Solera Stakes, and she is closely related to Camelot.

One Over Parr was more notable than merely being a sister to a classic star as she won both the Group 3 Lancashire Oaks and Cheshire Oaks and, in addition to Camelot’s third dam Fade, she is the dam of the classic-placed prolific Italian pattern scorer Tom Seymour (by Grundy).
