HEADING into the final day of Royal Ascot, Kyprios remains the only repeat winner of a race at the 2024 meeting, having doubled up in the Gold Cup after his 2022 success in the race.

It might be left to another stayer to follow suit today when it comes to the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes (6.15), as last year’s winner Dawn Rising bids to go back to back in the most extreme test of stamina of the week.

A guaranteed stayer who appeared to take a step in the right direction when fifth of six behind Kyprios in the Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes at Leopardstown last month, the Joseph O’Brien-trained seven-year-old will have the assistance of William Buick for the first time here.

Ryan Moore carried J.P. McManus’ colours to victory in the race last year but instead will partner main market rival Queenstown in Royal Ascot’s 2024 finale.

Frank Berry, racing manager to McManus, told The Irish Field: “It looks like a very competitive race. Dawn Rising seems to be getting there, having been a bit slow to get going [this season]. Joseph thinks that he’s back in good form, so hopefully he’ll be able to run a big race.

“Usually when you get the trip, it can be half the battle in those long distance races. Joseph seems to be happy with him.”
